If the pots still turn freely and smoothly I doubt you have damaged them by wrenching the nut tight.

trace your wiring and ensure you grounded the strings and the pot bodies to the sleeve connector of the jack and not the tip, usually EMF noise from fluorescent lights goes quieter when you touch the grounded strings.

check for a cold solder joint

Hey JL. I'm a complete beginner as far as electronics go. I connected the wire to the longest part of the jack. If what you're saying is that I should have connected to the shorter part, then that's my problem. I'll check the soldering as well. Could well be what you say. Thanks for the advice.

Good diagram. I found one similar on the net, which is probably what I should've done in the first place. Also should have realised the pots were already earthed to the sleeve. So just a case of zero experience and lack of research on my part. Love this site and the people on it like yourself who offer their wisdom so freely. Thanks again.
