Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

Howdy y'all I Just joined Cigar Box Nation.
I'm a blues guy from way back so naturally I'm interested in the history of the music, musicians and their instruments. After watching a few videos of others building and playing CBG's I was hooked! Now a few weeks and three diddly bows later I'm fixin to enter my latest creation in the "Paint Can Lid Contest".
Looking forward to learning from and sharing with everyone in the Cigar Box Nation.
Welcome Stefan. I try something different with each build too. Makes it all the more interesting.
Enjoy!
Hi all.
Been building stuff since forever, but recently got into CBG's. Loads of fun. Just finished my second pure CBG.
I enjoy experimentation and tend to build better than I play. Current favourite project is a two-stringed "erhu" abomination thing from an old bongo. Don't know what else to say really.
Hi all, from Sweden.
Hey all! Just joined the forum a couple days ago. Last summer, I was at the Orr’s Farm Arts Festival, here in West Virginia, and ran into a local guy named Steve Renecker that was selling these little CBG's. I'd never heard of them, but really wanted to buy one, but I had no cash on me. A year had passed and I don't know what made me think about it again, but I had saved Steve's biz card and called him to see if I could still buy a CBG. Steve has fallen ill though, and gotten rid of most of his guitars. He did offer me one of his own, but I turned it down so I could find out more about them before I purchased one.
It should be noted that I was a serious hard rock drummer for most of my life (I'm 53 now). I started playing when I was 5. I kinda got out of playing music when I hit 31. I was sick of lugging my 10-piece kit around, playing in bars, not getting paid squat, dealing with drunks in the bars, dealing with other musicians with drug, alcohol, ego problems, etc. I was working full-time in graphic design, and I just did not have the motivation to take my musical talent any further...I loved playing, but hated everything else that came with it. So, after my last band gig at 31, I came home, packed my drums into a closet and never touched them again...and honestly, I didn't really miss it enough to start again. I was a really good drummer too. Still have my kit packed away. When I was around 40 years old, I tore they labrum in my right shoulder working out at the gym. I had it operated on and fixed, but as anyone knows who’s had surgery…the area affected is never the same anymore. This pretty much sealed my chances of ever getting back into serious drumming again. I set out to be a serious drummer when I was young and I did and was highly revered by my musical peers. You can cath me here with my first heavy rock badn when I was 16. For 16 years-old I was kicking major ass on the drums:

This past winter I had alot of spare time on my hands, and decided that I needed a new hobby. I remembered the CBG’s that I saw last summer and got a wild hair up my ass to buy one. So now, I have ordered my first CBG guitar from Crumbley Casters. It should be here in June. Keith at Crumbley is a great guy...super nice. I had contacted one other very well-known CBG builder prior to Crumbley Casters and was pretty much blown off…not sure why…but I will remember him (I don’t care how good of a player he is). Anyway, I am psyched for my new CBG. It should be noted that I have never played a tuned instrument in my life…well, back in the mid-80’s a friend of mine lent me his Rickenbacher 4001 for awhile (I had a blast playing around on it). I’m an ear player. I can’t read music (except drum music). I have great rhythm though and a great ear for music…what sounds right. In my head I am already figuring how I’ll play this thing. I’ve got tons of musical ideas, so I can’t wait to start learning this instrument.
So, when I get my CBG you all will be hearing more from me. For now I am just observing and reading stuff here on this website.
Welcome to all the newbies. May you all get as sick as we are. LOL
Great to be a member of this board. I would like to thank Shane Speal, Ben Baker, Glenn Watt and so many members of this board that have been so generous with sharing their knowledge and skills. I built my first diddley bow 2 years ago and now have built a dozen or more 3-string guitars. Thanks to everyone look forward to sharing more with you!
I have been wanting to do the Cigar Box Guitar for a couple years now. Well, I pulled the trigger on a "Snake Oil Mini Humbucker" and the "Psycho 5 way switch". I also bought a "ready made" Cigar Box Guitar I plan on modding with the above referenced gear. Looking forward to learning some Delta Blues with one of these.
I started playing guitar in about 1964 (yep, I'm up there). About 4 years ago I started learning how to fix, mod, and set up Electric 6 string guitars. I am confident now doing this, So I am starting to work on other peoples guitars. So far, so good I have about 30 guitars that I have worked on, under my belt.
The Cigar Box Guitar will be my next project to learn play and build. Looking forward to joining in with you folks to learn and sharing all this wonderful info around. Thank You all for letting me join in.
Still learning navigate the CBN site!
As I play my CBG's for folks...I'm always asked two questions.
1) What is THAT???
and 2) Did you build that yourself?
I'm dyin' to answer "YES" to question #2.
Looking forward to learning from all of you!
