Hi all!

My husband is a guitar player (as a hobby), and I've pretty much bought him all the accessories he wants over the years. Our anniversary is in less than a month and I'm at a loss on what to get him. I got the great idea to get him a unique cigar box guitar, maybe even get it engraved. HOWEVER, the more I look online at the different ones available, the more I'm starting to think he might actually appreciate building one himself. He has done upgrades to his guitars, and loves building/creating. I'm completely clueless on all of this though.

So I thought I'd try to get some advice! Should I:

1) buy him one that is already made to feel out his interest and give him something immediately playable? If so, where is the best place to look? It's already too late to get a custom one made in time for our anniversary.

or

2) buy him a kit/pieces to build his own? If so, where do I start? Should I wait on purchasing the actual cigar box so he can pick that out himself?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Here's a kit from CB Gitty crafters that should get him going if you decide on that route.

If you decide on a custom made CBG I highly recommend the anonymous pick. He's a member here and does fantastic custom work.

He also has a website

I own one of Pick's custom guitars, and can highly vouch for it. Here's an example of me playing it for reference:

Jim, on the other hand, also makes a great point about the Gitty kit, if your husband is handy.

Tough call. My route into the madness was to purchase first (I have 3- and4- string CBGs from 5 different builders in my guitarsenal), the try building. I spend way more time playing than building. Your mileage may vary.

With the short time frame, I'd probably get the kit now, but also explore the many fine builders here.

And, as Ron says, there are many excellent builders here who have guitars available for sale if you skip the custom build requirement - 'till next anniversary anyway!

What Jim and Ron said.

If custom is the route then Pick's the man. Best value for the money.

I'd also throw Jason Mill's, Maddog and even Jim Morris in there too just for a variety.

geezz , thanx  for the  kind words  guys  .  especially   coming from  fine builders / players as  yourselves  .

i will  friend  Stephanie and talk over  options with her and see if a swamp witch is for her /  him .  if not  . i'll direct her to other fine builders such as yourselves .

thanx again guys . ;-)

Thanks guys! The anonymous pick, your guitars look awesome! Please message me, I'd love to get more information!
Hi, another way to check the relief (bow) is to fret a string at the first fret and fret it at the 12th at the same timekeeping. You can then sight under the string (Which will be dead straight) and see any bow of the neck referenced off the straight string.
Cheers Taff
Mmmmmm, wrong thread, Taff?

Or a coded message?

i can  wrap it in a bow   :-)

Like I said, code!

I have a code in by dose...
