I love listing to Lightin Hopkins play the blues.  I have not been able to locate a TAB for a 3 string CBG that would show me his basic riff.  I am tuned to Open G, GDG.  Any assistance will be appreciated.

In reality I'm not learning this song. Jut listening to it a few notes at a time. I've only listened to the entire song once. So far every note he's played can be done on a three string tuned to E Bb E. With the lowest E tuned to the lowest string on a six string. If he does go higher than what you can get on a three string there is a way around it. Just play the high stuff an octave lower. But so far so good.

In the last line above there's a lot of extra strumming in the C cord ( or A if your playing in E) that you can't get on a three string. 

This next part has a stretch for the left hand. A bar on the 7th fret with a note played using your pinky on the twelfth. If you can't reach or don't have the strength in your pinky just play the bar on the seventh.

And that's it! All of it. To the best of my ability. that was fun but time consuming. I enjoyed it. But to be fair from now on give me a song. Then a 'between this time mark to this time mark.' so I know more of what your needing help with. 

Indeed! I agree with the Rat: people asking for help, advice, etc., would be well served to be as specific as possible with their requests. Remember, we're all doctors here: sometimes we have to get the patient's full history to diagnose the disease.

It took about 10-15 posts in this thread to figure out specifically what the original poster wanted. That said, Customer Service is kinda like that (I used to work at a car dealership - actual conversation I witnessed):

I didn't mean the above to come across harsh. We wer all newbies once. And it takes time to learn one's way around, and figure out the landscape. Please, ask questions. Yes, there are days when Ican come across like Crankenstein, and I have had Customer Service experience, as well as having dealt with scripted computer help desks ("Is it plugged in?"), plus being a scientist and deputy safety guy, I tend to checklists.

Please don't be put off by our curmudgeonly supercilious behavior. We're really nice people, who can sometimes come across like...Dicks.

My thanks to everyone who had a hand in putting this TAB together.  A lot of time went into this response.  Just shows the extent that regular members of this organization are willing to go to help us newbe;s get started.  One thing that I learned from this was that I did not know how to ask for what I wanted.  I just blindly went to ths section and asked a question.  If the future I know the how to go about asking a question in this area.  Special thanks to the Rat. 

With that said.  It will take me a while to learn to play this even with the TAB.  Another good learning experience.

For me it was fun. And an experiment. I really did want to see if it was possible to play this with just three strings. And having the limitations of a 1.5.8. tuning. You need a 21 fret GBG. The the three lowest strings in a standard set. Tune them to E. Bb. E. and you can play along with the song. I'd rate the song intermediate in skill. Because you ned both good skill in all four fingers of the left ( fretboard hand ) and quickness of placement on the neck. There is also some picking techniques. Ghost notes, Two string sweep picking, And in most cases of the fret 7..5..0 and 5..3..0 you have to hit the first note and pull off quickly to get the next two. Along with muted or dead notes so you end up with a click instead of a tone. 

Honestly I can't play the song. i only listened to it through once. Then it was on to very short, perhaps three notes at a time, to transcribe it. This is the best way to learn something. Break it down into the smallest sections you can. One to three notes max. Get those notes. Then practice all of the song you know up to those last notes. Then get the next very small section. I used to teach people how to play by ear. This was WAY before the internet was a thing. 

It was fun for me, too. It got me through a sleepless night. And now I have two versions to attempt in the coming months: my simplified one, and Rat's far more detailed one. Kewl.
