I got a few 1/4" jacks from radio shack. The back of the package says mono 1/4" jack. There's an extra lug. It's not a ground lug. I tested it with a piezo on the ground and one of the hot lugs and it seems to sound normal. Should I be concerned about an extra lug not being used? What is this for? I can a pic if necessary.
Any advice appreciated.

If the tip has 2 segments, ie a black ring near the tip, you have stereo jacks, otherwise it might just have 2 grounds, just connect your hot lead to the contact for the tip, and you should be good

I put a pic now in the original post now. Thank you
It's radio shack part 2740255
Closed circuit...what does that mean?

by that pic, it looks like a switcheable jack plug, the extra bit of spring steel beside the  tip contact looks like a contact switch, so when unplugged, no circuit, when plugged in the contacts open and allow the hot wire to complete the circuit, so the top lug is ground, and i THINK either of the others will work, but one will switch off when unplugged, just in case you had , say a battery powered pre amp in your guitar, to the best i can make out it is not a stereo jack

It's the opposite. When unplugged the circuit is hot, when plugged the circuit breaks.

If you need the opposite then the little peg piece needs to be on the outside of the live bit.

Thank you for clearing this up. Makes better sense. I don't know how I missed that when getting it.
These switched Jack's are great. They cut down on the work and space needed to add a physical switch on a small project
That's cool. If you get a chance could you show how a toggle on off might be hooked up with a piezo with one these jacks ?
I've not worked with a piezo. But if I'm thinking correctly, you should use a jumper between the two "tip" parts of the jack so it's always on and then install the toggle in line on one of the piezo wires. Someone can chime in if I have it right or wrong
You won't hurt anything experimenting with it. It's half the fun!
Thank you. It's so cool to have the extra lug now...if I figure out something i'll let you know here.

If you have active electrics in the guitar it can be used as a circuit breaker to switch things off eg. Internal built in amp and speaker set up. Same as mine. If you don't then just ignore it.
