You could try burning it. Get it deep in the heart of a good old log fire. Blowtorches and heat guns don't work so well.

Or wire brush, lemon juice or some other type of corrosives. Try barbeque brown sauce for discolouration.

Or both.

Try it out on a test piece first.

There are paint alternatives but these have a tendency to scratch or flake.

I Recently made some stain using steel wool and vinegar. I also found this solution quickly put a layer of rust on nail heads. Just wiped it on and left it overnight.

Vinegar does nicely. 

Heating/burning Galvanized metal gives off toxic fumes that will make you very sick. If you choose to do this, wear a respirator and have good ventilation.

A torch and brushed on ammonia will age steel.

I like 'Acid Magic' for chrome it's not as dangerous as pure hydrocloric acid, might rust steel never tried.

The trick with acid is don't submerge, put your items on a shelf at the bottom of a tupperware container in less than 1/2 inch acid and seal it to let the fumes do the work.

Don't do this inside - beware the fumes can burn your lungs or kill you.
