Bamboo Steamer Banjo - Up on Flat Top Mtn

Calfskin head tacked on to a bamboo vegetable steamer with a walnut neck. I learned this tune from the wonderful playing of Al Petteway and Amy White.

Thanks Flatfish. These are regular steel banjo strings and yes, we usually call this tuning double D. Some folks tune to double C with a capo on the 2nd fret.

Very loverly. Both instrument and tune. What kind of strings are these? Nylgut? Also looks like you're playing in D?

Thanks Tim. This is one of my homemade necks. Neck making is my favorite part of building instruments so I rarely use stock necks. I was lucky that the 5th string lined up exactly straight with the hole in the tuner so the string is resting directly on the 5th fret rather than on a screw as is usual.

Way cool, Jim! I loved everything about it, the beautiful build, great claw-hammer style, lovely tune! Question: did you build the neck or custom adapt it from a stock neck? I noticed the innovative treatment of the fret-board for the fifth string.

Thanks Eric. This is very similar to builds I've done and documented in other vids like my gourd and salad bowl banjos. Basically a dowel runs through the body and is attached with a screw at the tail. On this one a standard geared 5th string banjo tuner was used although I've experimented with other methods of doing the 5th string. Some other folks on CBN have showed how to use zither pins for 5th string tuners and my next post will feature homemade friction pegs for all 5 strings.

Well done Jim sounds great...... Maybe you can post more on how you made that... Also how you do the 5th string....
