Earlier today, and in weeks past, I've read within several discussions that boxes are readily available in many areas, and pickin's are sparse and slim in others. There are a lot of cigar/tobacco shops in my immediate area, and I visit them regularly to select building materials. The selection is rather varied, and I can pick just the ones that experienced has shown are "better" candidates. I used to grab up 12-15 at a time until I realized that there were always a lot of them available. I typically pay $1 - $2 each, and the shopkeeper seems glad to see me. Not braggin', just stating the situation around here. It seems that some areas just don't have cigar boxes waiting to be bought. Why might this be? Are cigars not sold in certain geographic locations? Is there a return-of-box policy between the shops and the distributors?  Are available boxes just too pricey in some locales? Just curious.

I enjoy making my own boxes for license plate git's, but I sure like the ability to form a factory box into a cbg, with all the possibilities they present. Making boxes isn't rocket science, but making a 90 degree corner four times isn't as easy as one might think, especially without a lot of experience and some good joinery tools. Butt joint boxes are easy enough, but a four corner mitered box takes some doing to have everything align top-to-bottom and side-to-side. And as nice as my box might be (at least to me), it still isn't a cigar box.

Whadda ya say?

Yes, I have seen the craft boxes offered from various vendors online and in local advertisements from hobby shops. As far as online, there's Gitty and CigarBoxDeals on this very page. I guess I made an assumption that most folks do what I do...prowl the cigar shops and pick out boxes. Well, if you can't do that, I guess online is the route.

I haven't yet gone to one of my local cigar shops yet, so I can't speak for my area. However, I'm out here in Monterey California and whilst wandering around Cannery Row I found a little Cigar shop called the Humidor. As soon as I walked in there was a stack of boxes, and they were all for sale.

OK so I spent $5 on the box of my choice. Maybe a bit pricey, but what the heck, I'm on vacation.

The other choice is Amazon. I bought my first bunch of 10 through them. Its a random set of boxes, so you don't have a choice, but if you want some boxes to start with, that's a great way to go.

This is the new box. I already think I know what it will be when its done, but that's subject to change.

What a great idea!

Silly me! I was going to use it as a coffin for my dying pet jellyfish.

It just might be the perfect size to keep all your spare cigars in

I get free boxes from my local tobacco shop.  possibly because I was a steady customer for years before discovering CBGs, possibly because I bribed him with a CBG I built specifically for him.

Massively plentiful... I can find great boxes for $1.

I saw some cigar boxes in a window of a cigar shop in Taos, New Mexico. The owner was a character, and it took me three days to get the boxes because he never opened up shop for long. I was under a strong suspicion that the store was a front. He told me the boxes were ten. I refused. He then said 5 for each or two if I paid cash. He didn't want to charge a card, I said I didn't have cash, and head for the door. "Just take them," he said when I opened the door to exit.

I went into a shop in Durango because they advertised that they sold cigars, and I figured there must be boxes there. They had some pretty decent boxes. The kid working the shop didn't know what the boxes sold for, and had a hard time getting the owner on the phone for an answer. There were four boxes I wanted. I offered him 2 for each, and got two of them. Why not the four? Because I was working on my first and my wife said, "You are not going to start hoarding cigar boxes." Mind you we are living in an rv, and there isn't a lot of room for storage, and as you guys know women like to keep things neat. Well, I started thinking about those other boxes and what I could do with them so I headed back hoping he didn't talk to the owner yet. When I got there he said he got a hold of the owner and the cardboard boxes were 5, and the wood ones were 10 to 15 dollars. I passed.

Eugene Oregon I called a cigar shop, and they sent me to a hippie store called Hunky Dory that had a huge selection of beautiful boxes. I talked to the girl behind the counter a little bit about my plans for the boxes, and when I picked out about four she gave me the "for you" price which was a dollar each. I grabbed a couple more, and dropped a dollar in her tip jar. When my wife saw me carrying in the boxes, I told her what happened as to strike up a little healthy jealousy, and also my wife can appreciate a good deal. A couple days later I got the bug to get a few more boxes at that price, but the girl wasn't there and everyone else wanted to charge 4 to 8. So I waited for that same girl to be working. I didn't see her there until a month later, she did not seem to remember me at all, but I still ended up getting the boxes for two dollars.

At first I looked at boxes that had labels I thought I liked, and did not take things into consideration that can only come from experience, and imagining what you are going to do next and what characteristics you want out of the box. I don't even look at the label because I know it's getting sanded off. Now I tap on them, ponder on the depth, durability, etc. Moral of the story? Have fun collecting boxes! The rv is filling up fast with boxes, almost finish necks, and hardware, but still once and a while I look for a deal and will stealth purchase one and put it in a cabinet.

And you're still married? lol

where do the Aussies get there boxes from? there is a CBG maker not too far from me up on the sunshine coast but he wants $80 for a very basic kit that you still need some extras to finish it. he sells boxes for around $25 to $30, not cigar boxes though boxes he makes that are the same size as some brands.

wow just checked ebay

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Wooden-Cigar-Box-20-bidders-choice-/3222...

$20 per box and another $20 for postage... this could turn out to be an expensive hobby im thinking of starting...

Go round op shops and find boxes of all shspes and sizes Timothy. I just got a beautifully made photographic slide box for 1.50 at Salvos. I plan on makin a two string fretless bass with it.
Also from the Salvos this little suitcase which Im revamping to take a step down transformer as the pickup. See slot at rear of box for trannie core to poke thru

It was at the Salvos that I came across my first real cigar box. Cost me 6 bucks. I made a git with it but I didnt like the fretboard so I have re vamped it into a 3 string fretless.
