Here's what I'm thinking.

I intend to make a box out of scrap wood and a solid lump of Mahogany going through the middle for strength.

Now here's the thing, is it still a Cigar Box guitar if the box is not a Cigar Box?

I've made guitars out of Biscuit Tins, which can seem like a Cigar Box guitar, but are far from it, but is this going to be one of them?

Is that Seasick Steve and his 3 string Transwonder, by any chance.

If it falls outside the boundaries of professional/factory made traditional 6 string expected shape body with heritage pattern braced soundboard of pedigree tonewood following jigs and patterns handed down because "That's the way we do it no exceptions" pedagogy .....

then it belongs
order: maker
family: home made music
genus: CBG
Species: various (canjo, license plate, washtub, cigar box, wine box, toilet seat, et all)

Sorta' overstating the obvious, but...

“The cigar box guitar is a primitive chordophone that uses an empty cigar box as a resonator.” - Wikipedia

Top: Made from a cigar box, so it's a cigar box guitar.
Middle: Made to look like a cigar box, so it's a homemade guitar.
Bottom: Homemade, but has absolutely nothing to do with cigar boxes or any kind of box, so it's in a different category altogether.

Short answer: yes.
Longer answer: if you're concerned, go get a cigar. Put it in your box for a few seconds. Viola! You have a cigar in a box, ergo, it's a cigar box. Then you build a guitar with that box. You have then built a cigar box guitar.

This is called "in-the-out-of-the-box" thinking. ;-)
After you build the box, JP......put a cigar in it!!! Now it's a cigar box. Ta-da!!! Sorry, Oily, but I didn't see your (brilliant) answer before posting mine. I like the way you think, pard.

or a smaller cigar box and make it a cigar box box guitar

Gift it to your servant on Boxing Day...

Do it in your sox
With a fox
Eating lox
Watch for pox
When you walks
What ain't good
Must be bad
Or a fad
In the hood

Which is good.

Or put a pic of either Bob Seger or Pete Seeger in it for a Seeger Box Guitar.. I think any instrument that is homemade fits the spirit of what we're doing here and being too picky over semantics is a drag.

A Seeger Box Guitar....

I don't care who you are, that's funny right there!

Build a box and throw a cigar in it for a while, there it is a CBG.
