Thought I might start a discussion around what kind of workspace cbg buffs craft their intruments. For those like myself, who rent in a small unit you couldn't swing a cat in,it can be difficult working without trashing the carpet etc.I'm sure some of you folks have work benches etc to make a newb like me salivate. I'll get the ball rollin and say I did my first build in the bathroom mostly, on top of the washing machine. And a coffee table by the T.V. I throw a big plastic sheet on the carpet under it to catch sawdust etc.Needless to say I have trashed the washing machine lid and top of coffee table. And a few old books to cut on. Come on folks.I am sure someone has a story bout makin a cbg in bed. Or in the Loo he he he

Thought I'd just slip in a pic of a little jig I made in prep for my first fret using fret wire. I just made a small mitre the width of the fretboad I'm gonna do. I thought I would cut the depth slots in the mitre in relation to the fretboard slots. But then I thought why not just set it up so the fretboard protrudes at the top when placed in mitre. And then add a metal edge to top of mitre sides that stop your saw at the appropriate depth. Anyway its nothing original, just something I threw together. Hope it works ok.

Let me know how it works. I'm about to make my first attempt at fretting  with limited tools.

shall do Pavlo. By the way, the metal strips on the mitre are hacksaw blades, super glued on. Cheers. Jonno
Hi Jonno, if that does not work try what I used to do.Fit a piece of thin hard wood to the side of the saw blade leaving the teeth protruding the desired depth.
Cheers Taff

I work in a (as yet) dimly lit corner of the basement.  I built a workbench from a 24" wide, solid-core door.  Have a few power tools from before starting to build CBGs; table saw, drill press, small band saw.

The basement is crowded with items from other hobbies (home brewing beer, mostly), and stuff stored away that had a spot in a bigger home we moved from.  And the cats' litter boxes...

@ Taffy. Now why didn't I think of that lol. I just did wot you suggested and it is much less rigmarole than makin a mitre. Thanx for tip.

@ Evans. Great idea bout the door. Wow. Home brewin and cbgin. Nows there's a great combo. What else doth a man require. Burrrpp!!
Lol Way. Rofl.

An addendum to my fret slot jig post above is that I left off a crucial straight cut guide. So here is jig again with cut guide.

Nothing original but just puttin it out there. As this thread details cbger workspaces, then postin the tools and gizmos we use to get to a completed cbg is cool I guess. Mind you, such a thread about tools etc prob exists somewhere already on CBN.

I thought I replied to the wrong picture because of where the box went after I clicked save. Anyway, excuse me. I have had a long drive across Oregon and Idaho today.

Haha thats great! Been years since I seen that movie. All I have for a shop is a picnic table and some hand tools. I am not going to complain since I like being outside anyway. Looks like this week the picnic table is cemented to the ground, away from a tree or my awning, so I will be working directly in the sun in the desert. Again no complaints. I get to look at mountains all day!

Good advice. The friend to question my sanity is my wife, who is convinced I am nuts. But I tell her that is just a matter of opinion. I also remind her I don't have 2 crabby weeks a month.

Hmm. I found my mitre fret thingie worked well. I would dedicate a saw to it though as the teeth strikin the metal depth stopper hack blades gives them a workout. The slots are about 1mm wide which I now discover is twice the thickness of your average tang.I think I got the 1.5mm depth right. Help! Can I use 0
5mm thick tang in 1mm slot. Too Loose?. Sorry for ravin on bout this in this thread. I've read elsewhere using windshield wiper stainless strips.

you'll need to glue them,or they'll just fall out,i suggest epoxy if your slot is double width,Gitty's med wire is ,

.58 mm.ideally you use a saw with a .023 in. kerf, you could also, slightly 'v' the slots and glue small nails as frets,or even better bronze brazing rod,as it's easy to file down
