Man, making your own pickups is labor intensive! I only got this far after breaking open a "wall wart" dc adapter, breaking out the transformer, getting the skinny wire out, snipping an altoid box, winding a thousand wraps of wire... Phew! Just have to wrap some electrical tape around it and solder to an input jack....

Orr...you can take 10-15 minutes to build an induction pup ;-)
hi Ron. What do you think of the info here www.unterzuber.com/tap.html. Seems to me that if you made your guitar strings conductive and passed them thru a coil with magnets then you could output from the coil to an amp?. Rather then over the pickup as in standard mag pickup.
lol.Not being in the know about electrics I see now that conductive strings would be noisy and maybe dangerous. Is that correct?
I waded through some pics Way but didnt find one of the kind of setup you mentioned. I tried search with transformer as a key word. Will check out those discussions that search served up. I really want to have a crack at a diy pickup too. I bought some second hand AC adapters today and a speaker to maybe get its magnet. They look hard to get em from the speaker though.

ACTUALLY...

guitar strings that work with magnetic pickups are conductive, AND when they vibrate in front of the mag-pup's magnetic field they do generate a charge, AND when we ground the strings to the same local ground as the pup we are feeding that signal into the backside of the git's output jack to the amp, AND if we picked the right "ground" from the pup they are in phase and constructive and add to the sound or if they are out of phase they are destructive and subtract from the sound. .

We use the term 'ground the pup' and 'ground the strings', but they are not EARTH grounds, they are actually local common reference. Much like the battery in your car, the negative (-) terminal is connected to the frame/body/chassis and called ground, but its a local reference, not an earth ground.  if you touched an earth ground and the negative terminal on your car battery you'd get quite a surprise.

Lol.I know so little of this electric stuff. I imagined a conductive string like a live power cable.I have the pic in my head of a scene in the ozzie film Young Einstein. Thanks for the low down on string conductivity JL.
Great stuff

It's how a fancy/expensive ribbon mic works.  a ribbon of conductive material hung in front of a magnet. as sound enters the cage and makes it vibrate, it produces a tiny charge, only a few millivolts. The housing of the ribbon mic hides a pre-amp to bump it up to tens/hundreds of millivolts.  which is why ribbon mics need phantom power turned on.

Induction pups here:

Yes, you have to read all of it....
Ok you've got my attention! I found a YouTube tutorial but the placement of the magnets wasn't explained. Not sure where -and in which polarity-to place the magnets in relation to the wire coil...

I'm also a little confused! Pretty sure i hit the correct reply button... but anyhow, my attention was grabbed by the very first post that mentioned Induction Pups in 10-15 minutes. That's what I want to try. I have a couple wallwarts sitting here just waiting to be up-cycled into a CBG induction pup or whatever its called when you stick some magnets onto the thing you just pulled out of the wallwart case and solder the existing leads to the cbg output jack....
