It's in Market Drayton in Shropshire. 20 minutes from Stoke on Trent and Shrewsbury, an hour tops from Birmingham. They've got a whole beer garden that they've said we can use as a camping ground if anyone wants to use it.

That sounds great. Where are you based?

HI guys,

Ok, some potentially exciting news for people looking for cbg festivals in the UK this summer. I was talking to the landlady at the pub I worked at tonight and she's got very excited about the whole cigar box and roots music thing. She's actually offered us her pub including beer gardens for an entire weekend over the summer!! That's one side garden for camping if anyone wants to and the main garden complete with stage (and probably BBQ or hog roast, they like their events there) for performances. Inside is one big room too and there's a large front courtyard and car park. If anyone would be interested in playing, setting up little stalls, running workshops or just generally helping with the planning of this please give me a shout. This place is too good an opportunity to let slip without at least giving it a go!

Hi Simon, looks good to me especially with the variety
Of tips, and not over priced, and thanks for the heads up on the laser printer.
I feel a purchase coming on in the near future.
Believe me if my wife new what I had actually spent on tools in the last few weeks, I dread to think !
I'm on my third set of ears now.
By the way I may have mentioned that my right hand isn't working properly after a cervical spine op last October, it's virtually useless.
I saw the surgeon yesterday and I'm in for another major surgery in about 8 weeks. He didn't want to do it because it's really intense, but not being able to play properly after 50 plus years, I couldn't face.
And I was just getting the hang of it lol.

Take Care

Almost forgot, here's a link for the pyrography kit if you want to check it out. https://www.ebay.co.uk/ulk/itm/272081419433

Cheers for the box building tips guys. Phil, I've got a pyrography tool (a bit like a soldering iron with interchangeable tips) that I got off eBay which is pretty good. I've used it for fret marking on my diddley bows so far and signing them, but I'm going to give it a go for a 3 string slide next. When it comes to transferring pictures, I've done that for templates for the pyrography but was considering it for box designs too. One really good and cheap way is the same as for home made pcbs. Print out your design in reverse on glossy paper (laser printer if you've got access to one, or a pro printers should be able to photocopy it on to glossy paper for a matter of pennies, photocopier toner is the same stuff as laser printers use) then apply it face down to the box and use a hot iron with no steam on the back. The heat will transfer the toner to the wood and, after carefully soaking away the paper afterwards, it gives a good image. Obviously by varying the heat and time you can get varying levels of distressing but it looks pretty sweet. Apparently if you've got access to a laser printer you can even use old magazine pages with a cartridge paper border to print on to so it saves having to buy glossy paper. Us cbg-ers are all about cutting costs after all aren't we? :)

Well done finding those boxes Nigel. I spent ages trying to find the right size on amazon/ebay. Making your own is not too tricky or time consuming. I've got some lovely grained and plain spruce from 4D models which I've been making up into boxes. Generally I've kept them at 30x19x5cm, although I'm building one larger to test (37x20x6cm) the sound and feel of it. And I've been making a basswood box, which is easily trimmed and shaped to set a licence plate into the front. I've used 2.5mm for the sound board, which is about .6mm thicker than a regular acoustic guitar, but I'm thinking it will keep that lovely 'boxy' sound rather than ringing like a regular guitar. But hey, you don't know til they are finished. Now I need to build a load of necks!

Those boxes are excellent. I've used one, for my 'simple guitar' 4 string build. Pictures in my profile somewhere. It was so nice to work with and had a good sound to it. So good that I ordered two more from them. I didn't want to order more than that because I want to vary the sizes and scale lengths of my builds. But highly recommended.

Just ordered a couple of boxes of Amazon  https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006E72NDU don't know if they are any good but 12"x 9" at £6 each must be worth a punt.

Hi Simon i am using Sapele, but I'm lucky I have a master carpenter living by me, and I keep his computers going.
I am building 12"X9".
I tried the cigar box route but it was a bit of a lottery, I used 1 out of 4.
But I am looking at transferring images onto the fronts, and also possibly pyrography, which is burning images with a thing like a soldering iron, having first transferred an image outline. I am using 1/4" thickness Sapele with a double thickness on the top and bottom, and the 1/8" ply for the front and back.
They will have lids hinges and catches as would a cbg.
I have set up a small jig to get accurate replication.
It was a lot of work up front but it should make life easier in the long run.
Hope this helps guys.
Philyerboots.
