Good day, eh!!  Thank you for letting me join your group!!  I couldn't figure out how to post a new discussion so I sent a message to all members of the group...........sorry..........LOL

I have been in the Canadian Army for almost 28 years and am about to be medically released.  During my career I completed several tours overseas and I am glad I did.  They may have cost me physically and mentally but I believe the benefit that these missions had for the local populations made them more than worth it.  I used to be a drummer(pause for laughter) but that is just too difficult for me now.  I heard about CBGs recently at a local craft/woodworking fair and started to do some research online.  I have since discovered the Cigar Box Nation as well as this group and project.  If there is any builder out there who is willing to share their craft with me through this program it would be greatly appreciated.

Good afternoon Wesley. Welcome to the group. Were you looking for build advice or an instrument sir?

Also, where abouts are you located currently?

Good day, Henry.  I guess for right now I would be looking for an instrument.  The thought of building my own at some point does interest me and I would probably seek out advice at that time.  I am currently in Cobble Hill, British Columbia, Canada (it's on Vancouver Island about an hour north of Victoria).

Are you a lefty or a righty sir?

I am more than happy to build for you, but I am also involved with Guitars 4 Vets Canada and I did send them 10 CBG's in December. I've contacted them to see if they have any left.

If not I am more than happy to build for you sir.

PLEASE stop calling me Sir.  Wesley will work just fine.

I was unaware of the Guitars 4 Vets program and am really only interested in CBGs (and BBGs) at this point so I will leave any contact with them with you.

Whether or not they have one already for me will not change the fact that I am right handed.  I have to imagine that that is an important factor.  LOL.

Thank you VERY much for taking your time with me and for all of your efforts with both Guitars $ Vets and CBGs for Vets.  There aren't very many people like you, especially in Canada, who like to find creative ways to show their support and appreciation for the service provided by those of us in uniform.

If you have the time I would also be very interested to know how you became involved with CBGs, and these programs, and what sort of woodworking background is required, basic tools that need to be owned, etc. by someone who is interested in creating these instruments.

Thanks again, Wesley

Henry, I just realized that I have forgot to ask you earlier about the "to me" cost for being provided an instrument in this program.  In my 28 years of service I have never asked or expected anything for free just because I am a service member/veteran and I don't plan on starting now.  Everything in life costs something you just have to decide if the price is worth it....

Wesley

Hi Wesley,

Welcome to the Nation and thank you for your service to your country.

When we gift a CBG to a military member, it is our way of show our appreciation for the dedication and sacrifice military folks in every country have. We do not ask for any payment, and we certainly don't see it as a service member asking for a freebie.

If that makes you uncomfortable, you are welcome to work something out with a builder, Henry in this case, but we do not expect anyone to pay. It is just our way of saying thanks.

Dan

Dan, Thank you for the comments and the clarification.  I am humbled by the appreciation shown by yourself and all of the other CBGer's involved with this group and those like it. I must admit though that it does feel a little "weird".  Perhaps I will take your suggestion....

Henry, is there a way that I could make say a "donation" to you so that you can help get more of these out to Veterans such as myself?  Consider it a "pay-it-forward" type of thing.  I understand that the spirit of the program is no cost but I also understand that continually giving away your wares for free must take it's financial toll.  I would also like to know how to get involved in this program as a donor and, perhaps, down the road I can also "create" some joy for some other vets.  Please let me know and thank you for everything.

Wesley

It has always been my honor to be involved in this program to say thanks to all those who serve.

It would be great if down the road you started building for fun yourself. One day you can also build one for another service member.

I really do appreciate the offer but it is not necessary. You can "pay it forward" within your local community Wesley. Or ask Kim if there is anything you can do to help her program once you talk to her.

Have you given her a call? I let her know to expect you to give her a shout.

Keep me updated

Henry, it has been my honour to serve. Perhaps you are right and someday I will make one for another Veteran.

I did call Kim but got her voicemail and left her a message.  I'll let you know how it proceeds.

Perfect,
