How to earth (ground) the strings on a cigar box guitar.

This is my technique for earthing (grounding) the strings on my typical through-neck cigar box guitars. I earth one string and use a bridge with a machine screw bolt or a fretwire saddle.

What a great informative lesson. I will definately use that grounding process.

Thank You John!

Robert, you can do it either way, sometimes it's easier to push the wire through from the top..both ways work fine.

Awesome! Thank you, Chickbone. I am working on my first electric right now. This is perfect for me.

One question...Is there anything wrong with pushing the wire through to the bottom, instead of bringing it out the top? I'm just wondering if reducing that angle might reduce eventual breakage.

But maybe, there's just no reason to worry?

Thanks again!

CbJ, thanks so much for sharing this with us, sometimes you pro's forget that us mere morals don't 'get' what you are saying, like grounding it to the tail piece. Great info for me!!!

I'd assumed most people did this or a variant of it, as it seems so obvious. I suppose it's just one of the little work-arounds that I've figured out myself over the course of several years, so I sort of take it for granted. It's a little fiddly working the wire into the angled hole then teasing it out again, but it comes with practice. This was a one take, real-time demo, so it's exactly as I did it with no editing.

One thing that scares me about magnetic pickups and plug in the wall amps is the earthing issue which is why I've always used battery powered amps and piezo pickups. This is really helpful for if/when I ever get brave enough to branch out. Thanks for showing us, John.

Neat way of inconspicuous earthing, never thought to do it that way, thank you !!!
