I bought a couple of flat pups off Dan Sleep just before xmas.

so far I've not located a cover for it so I bought a 1mm brass plate.

the question is has any one use this to cover pick ups and does it work?

Brass is generally considered to be a tone sucker, but that's with alnico magnets. The neodymium magnets used in flatpups are much more powerful, so the brass may not be an issue, or may be much less of an issue.

Materials such as wood, nickel silver, aluminum and plastic are considered to be tonally transparent for pickup covers.

THANKS

I will drill 3 holes in line with the mag that should do it.

Just for fun, if you have enough material, try one cover that's solid and one with holes drilled for the mags.

Let us know what happens!

That's good information.

I've made the cover.

drilled 3 holes as stated work fine.

put another plate over the top and it still work fine .

makes no difference whether the f/pup is covered completely or not it still work.

Thanks for reporting back - that's what I thought.

I believe the reason it works is that neos are so much more powerful than alnicos (about 5X). I've heard of people using steel for covers (such as putting a neo pickup underneath a license plate) and it worked fine. Normally, steel would block the magnetic field (when used as a cover).

So basically, whatever "rules" there are for alnicos don't necessarily apply to neos.

I was thinking that you had purchased ThinBuckers with covers on them, but I guess you got the bare model instead?

I have sold a lot of the ones with the brass cover on them, and have not had any complaints about loss of tone or other performance issues.

Agree to you Dan. I read about treble eating brass too but in practice I haven't noticed any difference with or without brass covers.

yeah I did Dan.

I wanted a bare one for my son's xmas guitar.

I had spare but wasn't sure what I was going to do with it till now.

all is ok.

just need gold string putting on when I get them

once sorted I'll post pictures of it up. and its a cracker my best one yet.

Cool!
