Standard Tuning for the 3-String CBG
Sorry if this topic has been beat to death, but I searched and didn't find the discussion. Just as there are many different tunings for the 6-string guitar and 5-string banjo but they each have a "Standard" tuning what would you consider standard tuning for the 3 string? GDG?
Thanks Niegel & thanks for all the how to's on youtube. You're the Man!

Here is the latest addition to the CigarBoxGuitar.com FREE cigar box guitar knowledgebase: 3 printable sheets showing you the easiest and most-used chord forms for the 3 most-used keys C, G and D!
These are great for having on the table at jam sessions, since a large majority of popular songs are played in these 3 keys, and only use the chords shown on these sheets!
Here is what the sheets contain: two chord forms each of the "main" chords (root, fourth and fifth), and one each of the secondary chords (sevenths and minors):
Key of C: C, C7, F, G, G7, Am, Dm, Em
Key of G: G, G7, C, D, D7, Em, Am, Bm
Key of D: D, D7, G, A, A7, Em, F#m, Bm
I hope you find them useful!
UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIAL:
Justin Johnson's DVD on "Playing Slide Guitar" works great for unfretted 3-string instruments--like the ones many of us are particularly fond of making.
I've been working through the DVD repeatedly using several unfretted 3-string instruments instead of 4-string instruments like he's demoing. The lessons transfer just great and would provide an excellent starting point for newcomers (without contradicting any of the lessons available from Keni Lee, Knotlenny, and others at CB Nation).
He gives 3 suggested tunings showing which strings to use for each. For the first tuning (which re-creates Keni Lee's tuning suggestions), just leave off the bass string to play on a 3-string instrument.
The second tuning (which channels the "open" tunings of Ellmore James and Duane Allman) can also be made into 3-string tuning by omitting the bass string. His Ellmore James lick is even easier on 3 strings than it is on 4!
Justin's third tuning is for a D-minor blues with melody and accompaniment. Just omit the F string and you have the D-a-d tuning familiar to all 3-stringers as Knotlenny's "say you see" tuning. I actually believe that "Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down" sounds better with the F string missing.
Instructions are thorough. No music reading is required. You only need to know the alphabet through letter G and be able to count to 15.
Try it... You'll like it!
