Many of you may have noticed the absence of Wayfinder in recent weeks. It appears that he has deleted all of his many postings and has withdrawn from CBN participation.

I recently hooked up with Wayfinder over at Handmade Music Clubhouse. He is still very much into building and testing cigar box designs, but for reasons of his own, decided to leave CBN.

He did ask that I pass along his apology for omitting many of his interesting test findings. Unfortunately, he did not retain personal copies of these postings, so is unable to pass them along for those that found them interesting and useful.

It is unfortunate that Wayfinder found it necessary to leave the site as he was (for me at least) one of the most interesting posters on the building forum. I understand that on an unmonitored board, there is always the chance that conflicts, disagreements and misunderstandings can arise between posters of radically diverse backgrounds and cultures. As a result, good people, from time to time, take their experience and wisdom and leave. When they do, we all lose.

So, for me the lesson is simple-->As Ellen says "Be kind to one another."

Well, good to know that he's still in the hobby.   It would be good to post what you said above in Richie' Kay's thing on Wayfinder.   I hope to see him at KC fest.

And the kindness thing is or should be huge  - forgiveness too.   I need plenty of both!

Thanks for the idea. I re-posted the message over there as you suggested.

its a shame that some folks feel the need to piss others off.

wayfinder was one of the most active member on here so no doubt it will be a much quieter place with out him.

Agreed.   It is CBN's loss.  I'll go seek him out . . .

Funny how testosterone and ego can be transmitted at the speed of light by electrons we can't even see! To people who're are an avatar in a virtual world. Wonder what else we can't see?

Mirrors are treacherous things, and should be smashed. >:-E

Glad to hear he's still dong cbgs.  One of the best! Hoping to see him at KC fest too.

I must have missed that exchange...  Sorry I did.  I helped moderate a very busy site, and it was tough keeping the nastiness down.  It was all about anonymity behind a keyboard.

Things must have occurred quickly since I never saw the posting that kick the whole thing off. Wish I had caught it.

Oh too bad, he seems like an easy going guy and always very helpful.

Can't say it was all in one place. Don't know if I read the straw that broke the camels back. However I have seen quite a bit of unnecessary stuff. Never seemed to phase the guy so I never gave it a thought. He starts a contest and gets banged up. Posts musical ideas only to get slapped around by people who care more about proper notation. There's more but it's redundant. He posts, get's slapped, post, get's slapped....... but always seemed to land on his feet.

Witch hunts and flare ups will only tare this place apart. There are better ways of handling this. Stand up for members and be polite about it. Let the troll roll in it's own shit. Don't throw yours. If you get angry don't post. Take a moment. Then post a few kind words to support the victim. Nothing else.

Been on forums for well over 30 years now. I've seen it all. Have had it all happen to me. I've even been the bad guy. Not proud of that. Thought it was best to be honest.

I have been on a number of forums and this one is the only one that is actively unmoderated.  And yet it has the least fallout from banning and members that feel the need to R-U-N-N-O-F-T like Mrs. Hogwallop.  Get enough like-minded people in one place for long enough and some of them are going to feel actively or passively alienated.  It's too bad and doesn't make any of it right.

I've always been a little curious that CBN, Handmade Music Clubhouse and the Facebook groups almost look like a Venn diagram with a half dozen superimposed circles.  I guess there is "just enough" mutual exclusivity to keep them all sustained and make those who feel alienated in one place find another happy, if not temporary, home for this hobby.

It's because early on, back when this was merely a Yahoo Group, there was some sniping, bad blood, name calling, Puritanism, and wankerish behavior. Splinter groups then formed, and coalesced into the present day CBN, HMC, and other alphabet denominations. Bit like Swift's view of Christian schisms, really: various people wanting to break their eggs at either the larger or smaller ends, while still others were trying to teach their grandmothers the proper way to suck them.
