Angelina Baker on the Frustrating Fiddle

Here's the demo of the box fiddle that I struggled with to get a couple of notes to sound right. Angelina Baker is an old fiddle tune/song from the mid 1800'...

Mark, I didn't document vey much but my previous vid which I called Fixing the Frustrating Fiddle shows how I figured out how to improve it's sound.

Thanks Mark and Dave. Believe me, I made some pretty awful sounds with the bow before I could actually stand to listen to myself. I play 5 or 6 instruments halfway OK and fiddle has been, for me, the most challenging by far. I discovered a silent practice method that I still use when I can't play full on. I purchased a cheap ($10) bow and didn't rosin it up. It produces just enough sound that I can hear it but it doesn't carry to the next room. You can learn tunes and tell if intonation is correct and not get yelled at!

I've seen those Jamie. The frets are almost flush so you can still do the slides that are associated with fiddle playing but I've never attempted to make one. That radius would give me difficulties for sure putting the frets in.

Thanks Merlo, Dave and Stephen.

No hyjack intended Mark. I,ve got the same squawk going. I,ll never get as good as Jim. They make mutes for these with me in mind. The mute keeps your bow from slipping over the bridge too...

I play some mando a bit, and other instruments tuned in 5ths, and yes there is some crossover in that area.

The core problems for me have proven to be the feared combination of "shaky" and erratic squawky bowing, and the fact that the things are so danged loud when learning/practicing!

I would be thrilled to get to where I could play like Jim anyway, that was the point. Wasn't trying to hijack the thread.

Mark, my attempts at fiddle are slow. However, the two string "bowed diddley" have been great fun. I can simplify a drone part to play along with my band. Also, I've been playing mandolin. The fiddle and mandolin are tuned the same so you learn the finger positions on the mando, then translate that to fiddle. I,m still very bad at it, but I,m learning and my band mates tolerate it. I change the instrument I play as often as I change my socks so they both stink.

Eh, frets may help for training, but it removes an important part of the nature of the fiddle sound IMO.

And its mostly the bow technique that seems to elude me anyway....

Oh, PS. I hate it when people make it look so easy.........

Damn fiddle tortures me. there's not too many instruments I haven't been able to pick up and pretty quickly be able to play a rudimentary tune. But my attempts at fiddle are just rude. :)
