Welcome!

This is a Group for anyone living in the great state of California, who builds, plays, or is just a fan of Cigar Box Guitars, and similar Handmade instruments. If you don't want to say exactly where you live, just say Northern, Southern, etc. I want to be abreast of any major gatherings...this summer is out, for me, but maybe next....

Just finished my first build a three string fretted with electrics. Problem? No good volume. Volume knob to the max, amp volume to the max and it's audible.I used a radio shack mini pot and had some trouble getting the wires soldered. Would overheating the pot cause such a problem? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

So here is an example of a Canthing:  A tenor CanUke made with a See's Candies tin.  It has the first set of Worth string that I have ever used and I like them.  Only 2 weeks until the meeting at the Strum Shop, so get them Canthings strung up and ready.  The prize is ready, but you won't know what it is until June 7th!

I want to send out an invite to anyone in the Southern California area. My cigar box band is playing our first show on Friday May 22nd. We are opening for my other band and playing an hour set at 9:00pm. The show is at the Pitstop Pub Sports Bar & Grill 26900 Newport Rd Menifee, California 92584. If you come by make sure to come introduce yourself, I'm looking forward to building new friendships with fellow CBGers.

I will be there. Might be a little after 1 because I will be leaving after Church but I will be there

I'll be there and ready with a couple new builds.

Will, I made a Can-thing using a tin you gave me at the last meeting - but you won't recognize it. It kinda goes ' BamP '  when I play it. Lookin' forward to the meeting as always.

Well guys, it's only 5 more weeks until our next meeting of the CBG Group at the Strum Shop in Roseville on Sunday, June 7th.  If you haven't started your CAN thing, it's time to get going.  I have the prize, but you won't know what it is until the winner of the contest is announced.

I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Jason and I just recently got into CBG building. I am the lead singer in a pop punk cover band called Cadaver Pudding in Southern California. We cover anything from Tony Orlando to Taylor Swift. Recently someone offered us a really good gig, but asked if we could do it acoustically. We told them we could, but I didn't want to be a typical acoustic band. I then remembered being in Louisiana and seeing amazing musicians in the zydeco bands, and the heart and soul that they pour into the music. At that point I researched jug band instruments, and came across CBGs. I was hooked instantly! I watched countless videos on building and playing them, but nothing could have prepared me for what was about to happen. The first time we practiced with the new instruments, my chest felt heavy. I was so excited with the music we were making on instrument I built a week earlier. We are the same band but playing under the name "Contraband Jamboree" as an homage to the Country Bear Jamboree (RIP) that was a staple of every trip to Disneyland in my childhood. We now find ourselves losing sleep and constantly texting new ideas back and forth and all because of cigar box guitars. I have read a lot of posts on this webpage, and I'm excited to be part of this community

I don't think it should end. I know I haven't been at the last 2 but will be at this one. It was just bad timing on the last 2 meetings. If you need help message me

I, for one, would be truly bummed at the end of any future of the CBG North CA chapter of the CBG Revolution. I don't think it is possible to extinguish a National this way, but you can say we are disbanded.  ... and I say that a few will hunker down in dry little hovels and workshop holes and not re-emerge until it rains in California again, CBGits in hand -some for sale-  Triumphant;  mayhaps a bit bleary eyed, trailing sawdust and small screws behind us. or -  them. If I don't make it myself.

PS.  I've got a Tin Cangit started,  and I hope to have it just about completed this Weekend. The main tin is one I got at the last meeting, which I have 'antiqued'. I'm gonna play somethin' on it in June.

The next meeting of the Sacramento Area CBG Group will be on Sunday, June 7th, at 1pm at the Strum Shop in Roseville.  At that meeting we will have a contest for the best CAN based instrument.  Any shape, size or portion of a CAN (like a lid used as a resonator) and any number of strings.  I will be the sole judge and the winner will receive an as not yet specified prize.  Playing the CANJO, CANUKE or whatever you call your instrument, will be a plus.  If you can't make the meeting you can post pictures/video here in this group and I will make my judgment on that.  Our last meeting was very good, but only 5 members attended, so the future of the CBG group maybe near it's end.
