I would print the label on sticker paper or print on decal paper. Then you would not risk any glue problems

Hi there.  do any of you guys have any ideas on how to stick a label to a box without messing it all up with glue? Or what type of glue to use for a clean job? The box I'm using is about 60 years old and it has stickers proving it's a cigar box,  unfortunately they are falling off because of age.  I'm going to stick them back on and then use danish oil on the box.

Jim-

Some will glue the frets and it doesn't cause a problem until you decide to re-fret the the fret board for some reason later on down the line. Then you stand the chance of pulling a chip out of the fret board when removing the old fret. Not guaranteed to chip it but there's a chance. In reality unless you do a crappy glue job no one should be able to tell the difference. I've thought about doing it myself a couple times but haven't convinced myself to yet.

Jim,

You mean glue the fret into the slot?

I don't unless I made a mess of the saw kerf and it is way too loose.  Or I had the fret in and out too many times and the slot has widened.

Some people do glue them in.  To me it is redundant and messy.  Not needed.  Not a sin though.

3 string.  I put together a 3 string about 9 months ago, but never finished it.  It had a crappy box and I never did like it.  I came up with a nice box that I wanted to use, so decideed to put it on the 3 string.  Glad I did.  I am pretty happy with it so far.  It is not complete, but I had it together enough to play.  Sounds good.  The box is Undercrown,  Very thick lid, so I turned it upside down.  The reason I wanted a 3 string  is that there are more video lessons for them than the 4 string.  And I have heard some great playing on Youtube.  I have built 10 4 strings plus 5 ukes.  Tuning is open G.

Happy New Year everyone.  I celebrated last night by putting frets on my 3 string.

It might be consider a sin....Should you glue a fret on the fret?

Hey Scott,

Another little tip you might want to try.  After 7 coats of Tung Oil on the neck, I did an automotive polishing compound treatment.  It smoothes the finish just a bit and adds a little more gloss.  More bling is a good thing.

Thanks Tom will try those.

Daniel, you can also use an archival pen to mark the fret lines, I use Pigma Micron black to mark turnings that I do and finishes do not affect it. You can find them at Michael's, or a good art store. HTH

Side fret Dots:  I buy the black ones at StuMac.  For copper color, I use 14 ga solid electrical wire.  Like in house wiring.
