I was cleaning up my shop ... cutting up bits too big for my wood stove... Evidently ran past the pusher on my angle gilhooley... hit the thumb pretty square...  never touched the nail...

The mess I'm (trying) to work in.

I was making a 3 string for a VERY small lady, so I tried to make a very low profile neck for her tiny hands. All was going well until I tested the rigidity and discovered I had made a pretty good…Continue

Oh yah I have been sanding a bridge base flat and sanded my fingers and thumb to the meat before so sand paper though simple can be a quiet killer LOL

So how is head stock = peg head affecting the scale length? If scale length is from nut to bridge giving say 24.5 the string past nut and bridge should not affect scale length. I went to a guitar building school and this bit of info I must have missed. On old guitars the tailstops are so far back they sometimes have 3 inch or more from the bridge does this change the scale length? Just wondering

Shawn, yes. Scale is from the inside dimensions between the nut and bridge. This is the length of the vibrating string.

One thing that everyone MUST do: Be SAFE! Myself and one other member here have torn up our fingers not keeping and eye on forstner bits. BAAAD news and take a while to heal.

Been there fixed that. I just "dished out" where the tuning machines went on the headstock, kinda like you see people do on a dulcimer where you strum.

Another "fix" for the problem, is to drill out divots on top, smooth them with a dremel so that you have sorta/not quite little box heads around each post. Only thing, your posts will be vertical, but you will be able to wind down you stings... Sound like experience?

the best, Wichita Sam

Isn't scale length from nut to bridge?

On a woodworking forum this guy who has been working with wood a long time said "The sign of a good craftsman is one who is able to conceal his mistakes". Also a friend of mine, who is a crafty/artistic person said "Embrace the defects". That having been said. The guitar I am working on has an angled peghead. Tonight I drilled the holes for the tuners. Oops, I didn't check to make sure the peghead was the right thickness. It wasn't. I can't thin the top side because that will change the scale length I had planned on. The fret board is already made. I have an occilating sander so I think I can correct the problem from the underside.

1st build goofs. My confession:

I compensated for the height of the cigar box lid when I cut out the groove in the neck for it to rest, and THEN I compensated again in cutting the notches in the box that the neck slides into. So I now have both notches 3/16" too long. (easy fix)

I also pushed a wee bit to hard in drilling out one of the peg-tuner holes in the headstock and knocked a 1" sliver out. It's glued back in and serves as a reminder to not rush things!

I have been working on my 2nd build, sanding away with my dremel until I burnt up the motor. I loved my dremel, used it for different things. I guess I will have to buy another one, more expense. I still haven't fixed my problem with the hole for the jack. I do have have the neck ready for painting. I guess I can paint without tearing up something.LOL.
