Hmmmmm. Might be a thinner type box than you can use. Post a pic. Some are nt usable

Wonder if hes talking about the original boxs before being put in the display. Those would be that soft cardboard from white owls and other blunt type cigars the kids use .......Right?

Here's a pic of the 2 boxes... both are wood covered with glued-on wood, which thankfully there was just a recent thread about removing all that junk.

That Macanudo is a great box, I just built one look at my page for pics. Sound is sweet, good freebies. Just wondering why remove the labels? The cigar box label gives them character, just my opinion though. The other box looks perfect too, keep going back to the convenience store.

yeah - i totally lucked out, for sure! anyway, i was hoping that other people might luck out as well at their local convenience store, or by some other unconventional location.

yeah - ugh, i just don't know. on one hand i wanna remove the labels altogether, but on the on the other hand, like you mentioned, leaving the labels give em a certain character that's not easily replicable - a certain Je ne sais quoi, as it were. is there already a thread regarding one's opinion about labels on vs. labels removed, aesthetically speaking?

You lucked out at the convenience store. Most of them in my area only buy enough to stock their display so they don't even deal with boxes.
I built a wall hanger cbg for a local liqueur store that has a nice cigar selection and all his boxes from 3 stores come to me now. I go in weekly and pick up boxes and make nice-nice with the owner.To my knowledge nobody around me builds cbg's so I'm happy to snatch them up for myself! I'm up to around 200 boxes now so the free cbg was worth the effort.....and the fact I buy all my wine and Captian Morgan from him dosen't hurt any either.

Aesthetically its up to you, but the corner joints of the paper covered box's are not that nice, the unrapped box's with the nice varnished finish are much better. You may not like what you see under the paper, just plywood stapled together with a little glue also. Some box's work well backwards, then you have a clean face to work with and the label is to the back, they say the sound is better this way also. Food for thought. In the end it's up to you, its your work of art and at the price of the box you cant go wrong.

I've been going through a number of paper-covered boxes - since I can get them more easily than the plain wood.

I've found some paper-covered boxes made of cardboard with a plywood bottom, others are a plywood/fibre composite of some type with plywood on top & bottom. So far it's taking me about 4 hours to get all the paper off and then there are complications - like the top doesn't fit very well any more, the box is too flimsy and has to be reinforced substantially, etc.

Another issue with using the bottom is that most that I get have a deep diagonal cut along the bottom that interferes with the looks.

So far it seems to me that if you've got paper-covered boxes you're probably best off keeping them that way.
