Hey guys.  Just finished my first resonator and I'm not happy with the sound.

1-it is very tin-y sounding... too much

2-Any abrasion or tap on the body is picked up... even my voice if I talk at the body or pickup.

The body is hand made with poplar, 1/2 inch thick.  Hollow body.  Dog Bowl resonator.  Pick up is hand wound and epoxy'd to the inside of an altoid lid.

To attempt to mute it some I put rubber on the inside of the altoid lid around the outside and added some hot glue under the surface.  I also added two small strips of some light foam materisl to the underside of the body around the pickup.  No change...

Any ideas how to remove the sensitivity of the pickup?

I'm only using the lid of the altoids tin, not the whole thing.  I already filled the underside with hot glue, but no improvement.  I already cut that PU out and am just starting to wind a new one with poles and wood.

On piezos... me no likey'em...

see the comments in this blog as it's similar issues with a pickup under a licence plate...

Interesting!

I went back and experimented with the first altoids tin PU I made... mounted in a guitar that sounds amazing.  It does have some (a little) of that piezo effect of picking up handling noises, taps, etc...  but no where near this one.  This one also has 1000 more wraps tho... and is next to the dog bowl.  Too many variables to narrow it down completely.

When I get time I will experiment more with this troublesome PU....  right now I want to get the new PU done so I can hear this guitar.... :)

Wire around old 6" nails works well..with magnets on the bottom..

I think you may just need a pole piece from the magnet to come through the lid like a charlie cristie pickup?

you need 5000-7000 turns

old tiescos were between 3k - 5.5k resistance whihc were poor

a good hot one woild be 10-11k (ie more windings thinnner wire)

try some stronger Ni magnets under the tin

Perhaps a bar just poking through the lid or 3 pole pieces?

the above I made was quiet but rich in sound.

The domino was better as had much more winings and was potted in melted wax.

under the cut down 6 " nails are small round Ni magnets.

cut the 2 outer nails and then use the central 6" nail as your winding spindal

cut off when done. I use an old hand drill in a vice and a vertical dowel guide rod

it works.

I'm intrigued to what the issue is now?

My radio tin if you touch it you can hear it see the link to the previous blog on that number plate reso issue they had. It seems similar

Yes, I think I need something sticking up out of the lid (or flush with it).

The altoids PU has a NI mag in it.  5000 turns.  The previous one I made had 4000 and sounds great.  42g wire.

I used the same 3 nail method to spin the PU to wind it.  Now I use NI magnets to hold the PU to a plate in the end of the hand drill.

I am convinced the problem lies in the flat metal lid over the magnetic PU...  not sure why or how...

correction... 40guage

I agree.  I normally use nails.
