Should work fine. I've used a bee's wax boot waterproofing paste and just hand rubbed it into the wood. looks good and leaves a nice natural looking finish. Just buff it out with a towel when you get done.

for a bare hardwood surface lemon oil works well and is de rigeur for most guitar fingerboard woods especially rosewood, many on here use all sorts of exotic oils, I just spray over with two coats of lacquer :-)

I wouldn't heat the board in any way it might loosen the frets...

No, no, no!!! Don't put wax on, it will just get tacky under the fingers and trap dirt in the wood. Sparingly wipe over with lemon oil and that's all you need to do to emphasise the grain. It's what most guitar makers use -  rosewood doesn't need any other sealing or treatment. Any wax or thick oil will just get transferred to your fingers and get rubbed back into the wood together with dead skin and dirt. Just a very light rub over with a thin oil like a proprietary lemon oil treatment works fine, and an occasional rub over will help lift dirt off the fretboard.

Wax off, no wax on! What CBJ, sez: lemon oil, or a good quality (think Goddard's) furniture oil. I've been wiping down my fingerboards, most of which are rosewood, on all my gits every time I change strings (about once per month or so) for the last 38 years. No wax!
