This 100 foot Sears & Roebuck measuring tape reel was my dad's. I used it today and it cranked (reeled in) way too stiff.
I want to preserve it in good working order to pass it on to one of my sons.

How can I make it crank more easily and make it last>?

Great you got her reelin and a rockin Uncle. Wonder if my National New Yorker's tone pot will come back to life with WD-40? It's a crusted relic with no can on the pot, just wide open. I've not seen one like it before. How does Clock do that stuff? He's good.

Y'know, if you throw some flour and salt in that bag, you could have Shake and Bake...

Yup, Gary.  Steel.   Pulled out.  Wiped down.  WD-40ed.   Working great.  :)

I would agree with a couple of the other guys.   Pull all the tape out (steel, I presume), clean it off real well and use some WD-40 or 3 in 1 on it.  Also try to get some lube in the mechanism if possible.  Maybe you can shake some of the dirt out if you flood the mechanism with lube then skake it onto a clean paper towell to see what comes out.

Guys, thank for the fun comments and the helpful comments.   The 'tape' is metal.   I unwound it, wiped it all down and clean and then WD-40ed it and it works much better.  I have it in a plastic bag now to keep the dust out.  And I put a brief history of it (who it belonged to) inside the bag.
