My thoughts and opinions as I drink my second PBR with spicy hot V8 juice.   PBR and spicy hot V8 juice.  Cheap and good.  Like CBGs.

I see a decline in the numbers of videos and photos posted on CBN.   Is interest decreasing?

I have a shit-load of opinions on this, but right now, I want to hear what you think.  What is the state of the CBG world and where is it going?

While the world declines

I’m reclining

While the world denies

I kiss the skies

If the cigar box world is declining

And my D string is whining

I’ll sing a song for the one I’m pining

Declining

I think not

Sounds like a government plot

I call for an all stop

Hey, Woody.  I hope you are back in good health.  What are we getting on youtube?

Ellwood,

Go for it T. Bear. I'm looking forward to your rendition!

I like that Smiling!

I love seeing this topic keep popping up on the top content list. With what I have seen in the last couple of weeks, there is no question that this whole crazy thing is just getting started.

Well, I'd add this opinion. After witnessing some of the York festival. As for performance, the CBG future is apparently in some pretty young and talented hands! Some amazing kids!

Not to rain on anyone in particulars parade or anything, but several of the "main attraction" artist sets were a serious letdown IMO. I'd say more about that opinion, but doubt anyone seriously cares what I think about that.

But the show stealer by a mile was the red headed kid in the book depository. I missed his name........ But would like to know it to keep on the watch for him in the future. Simple, soulful and smooth. Absolutely gave me goosebumps.

You see, my opinion is nearly the opposite in what qualifies a good stage line up for a CBG festival. I like to have the professionals do their sets and give it. However I'm also listening for that unique sound or style that defines difference. Too many blues fest are performing old cover songs or new material that just sounds the same same ol same ol. We had one hell of a storm hit our fest and it forced us close together where we formed small band camps around the parameter. It was much more personal and active than on a sunny day fest. The music we played would never have made a recording but I wouldn't trade it. To me this is what defines us from main stream events and why we don't pull in corporate sponsors. It's because we're back ally, street corner, porch strumming enthusiast. Plus we support one another in that venture. I hear young men like the one you described and I get goosebumps too :)

Wow,, Mister Dog.  I like that.

After seeing these last two posts, it got me thinking. Some people wanna rehash Robert Johnson, Son House Muddy Waters, etc. ( nothing wrong with that; that's how you learn the ur-blues). Others wanna do their own thing in their own idioms, mixing influences (where I personally tend to live). And there's a whole spectrum of styles and talent in between.

Which brings up the question: what style of CBG music do you favor? Strict puritanical Covers? Personal takes on old faves? Original music that sounds old? Mashups? Weirdest sounds imaginable? Basic chunk-and-thump? Shredtastic humiliation?

Hi Ron!

Well, since you asked, maybe I should clarify. First caveat, I am aware its largely a matter of taste. I have been having this internal battle with music in general lately, (So not just CBG related feelings) I have really grown soooooo tired of mainstream popular music of multiple genres for many reasons, overproduction and stupid engineering trends are largely to blame. Then theres the large amount of vapid idiotic sophmoric songwriting. Feels like being force fed mediocre previously frozen low budget public school lunch grade food.

And no, you don't have to rehash the greats, but having a few of their styles locked down wouldn't hurt. But from there, make it your own.

First rule for me, as an audience member-generally, the song is king. The lyric/story and the vocal/melody come first. Unless its a guitar led solo instrumental. It seems that many forget that the instrument largely accompanies the song, not vice versa. Unless you can kill it like SRV or something, then you go with your bad self and I will be in awe of your ability.

Pounding out a rhythm on the thing alone isn't going to come across that well. Strumming harder more aggressively and faster does not improve your playing. Adding an absurd amount of distortion or playing at ridiculous levels does not improve your playing. If I cant tell if its a guitar or a buzz saw and want to step back about a quarter mile to better hear it, I'm more likely to be annoyed than entertained. Maybe thats more "Rock and Roll" to some people or whatever. Maybe I am just getting too old for that. After all, I have moved away from my old rock and roll days and really have gravitated lately to more acoustic genres anyway.

Oh and adding a great lakes worth of reverb does not make your playing better or make it more "Bluesy."

Switching between 42 instruments while telling your version of the history of the world is impressive, but I'd rather hear someone play three or four very well, and with enough soul and feeling to move me.

Give me dynamics, ebb and flow, know when to play softly and when to play a little more aggressively. As I mentioned to begin, its a matter of taste.

I really like what you say about the song being king.  I forget that. Most do.

As for people doing good stuff right now, check out (youtube) Willie Watson and Hurray for the Riffraff- kudos to Wes Carl for telling me about them --- and my long time fave- Guy Davis.

"I really like what you say about the song being king.  I forget that. Most do."

Thank you for getting the point John. You know I love ya man!

But its just an opinion, and tastes and interests vary all over the place. Thank goodness for that!
