My thoughts and opinions as I drink my second PBR with spicy hot V8 juice.   PBR and spicy hot V8 juice.  Cheap and good.  Like CBGs.

I see a decline in the numbers of videos and photos posted on CBN.   Is interest decreasing?

I have a shit-load of opinions on this, but right now, I want to hear what you think.  What is the state of the CBG world and where is it going?

For what it's worth....I am so grateful to have found this site a few years ago. Since then I have built a few dozen instruments and sold a few but I am still an amateur player and while I am getting better I am still loth to make a video and post it. Have posted a few piccies early on but there are so many great builds that I am a bit shy about my own creations.

All that being said I have missed being on the nation about about three nights since I first found it. Not posting a lot but marvelling at the creativity and talent of you all and I believe that your enthusiasm and joy as builders, players and community is a sign of great health for a hobby, lifestyle,  creative  outlet and for some a business thats also a pleasure.

I have had a market stall creating cbgs and cookie tin instruments

for a year and my greatest pleasure is to see that first look in a newbies eyes. It still finds many who have no idea that these exist.

I have seen some of the best builds and some of the worst but they are all wonderful because they are not "commercial" but created with someones passion for what has become an artform.

Its lost nothing for me.

Was at the festival this weekend, no loss there. Shane Speal told his story of going to cali recently and they were all amazed at the CBG's. The addiction is just getting started as he put it and I truly agree. Will post pics later

Well well well.. here goes... As this being the only forum I participate in on the internet I can only state the obvious and my opinions... I found CBG Nation several years ago.. I love the Blues, I love the feelings the blues brings me, the honesty.. BUT being part of the nation I believe many people feel as I do.. We start out with a passion of loving the Blues, We love the idea that we can have a hobby and get away from the kids for 2 hours a week and we like the fact when we are done building Something will come out of the amp and someday we will learn how to play... Well we never learn to play like we hear others around us so we keep building.. At some point we run out of things to build and I should learn to play... then time passes... and so does the interest in the Nation because we have now become independent from new knowledge and we know the tricks to building... AND IF any of us lonely builders out there ever thought they were gonna make money at this we found out that we were wrong as well... First of all there are many incredible builders on the nation... Next is a topic I haven't seen touched....  CB Gitty... YEP the take over... I like Gitty, never had any bad things to say about him or buying stuff from him BUT after buying the Nation from Shane it seems like there was a shift from a more personal relationship forum, to a forum holding up a business...  Then when things settled down, Gitty as a business decision then competes with same people whom he sells guitar parts to by building and selling his own... So I'm not sure about others on the forum but I have mixed feelings. I guess Business is Business. I guess I could have done the same if i wanted to. Then we see the record label aspect.. To which I bring up.. a subject we all can relate to.. Comparison.. This is NOT Gitty's fault but our own.. We will always compare ourselves either to others  in talent, building or any other aspect of our lives... In the end if any of this makes sense, What I'm saying is the close nit family environment I don't believe is here anymore, We only want to be where we fell wanted and feeling wanted and mixing a business.. doesn't equal out to relationships...  That's it.... Or just maybe I'm old....

Some of its about the blues, some about country, folk, or anything that floats your boat. Some of its about players and performance, some about listening and fans. Some is about builders, some about consumers. Some about musicians, some about collectors. Some about function, some about art. Some of us seem to only see one little portion of the picture.

Now its me thats old.

Gitty sells guitars? I thought it was just a really expensive online hardware store."

And some of us are just rude.

Hip Bone,

Your point about Gitty selling CBGs is well taken. Before he started doing that, I would buy from him even though I could get stuff cheaper elsewhere (his customer service is great). But after he when into completion with his customers, I have not bought a single item.

How much of the world do you want? I will never be a volume marketer... (don't want to), but the CBG world is a community of niche markets. I doubt that I will lose a single sale to Gitty. I also doubt that the few CBGs he will sell will offset the ill will that the move into instrument sales is/will cost him....

JMHO,

Wichita Sam

we all have to ask ourselves that and ill bet you will find a lotta different opinions.  in my world im not surrounded by CBG people to jam with but i stick myself into a near-few musical situations.. just started building stuff my 1st is near completion . i front a 4 piece band on CBG coming up on 3 years now. i challenge myself to learn 2 songs a week. my video capability is gone for now maybe soon.. played the CBG fest North West. had a great time my daughter lives in Eugene so ill  be back again.. im doing more and inter netting less. by the way i played your CBG it was sweet UJ.  just keep doing it . its great to meet up with other like minded i always take something home with me. dont get frustrated by peoples seemly lac of interest this site is busy with looky lou's. ya never knows just looking at your work or vids.  im trying to network more i love these little guitars!!!

Hey, Bob.   Cool you got to go clear up to NW fest.  Makes me feel good you liked playing one of my simple builds.

this has turned in to a monster. The gift that keeps giving. I buy stuff from Giddy just spent $100 on fretting supplies, rather give Ben my business then Stew. Stew don't 3 string.

;-)

Have to agree. Give the guy a break. He has  tried to turn this thing into a business for himself yes, and I wish him all the best and would buy from him again in a minute. And soon will. He went well out of his way to process an order for me some time ago when I was having trouble with a credit card that wouldn't work online, and I still really appreciate that.

.I build my own stuff when time allows, and yet might just purchase a guit from him for many reasons, including support of his efforts, and just for the fun of it and they look cool enough to add to my collection of eccentric stuff.

All I have seen is an effort from Ben to stock and offer what many people might need, while doing his part to aggressively promote and prop up this little niche hobby of ours. Prices are fair, I dont expect him to match the folks nearly giving stuff away, or compete with the "big guys." And besides, he's put a lot of effort into it in what I see as an effort to improve this experience for as many as possible.

Shane did and does build and sell CBG's as far as I know, and I never once heard anyone complain about it or describe it as a conflict of interest when this was his site.

I think complaints like this are potentially like shooting ones self in the foot.

What I learned after starting this mess was:

1. never start a blog or forum after 2 beers on a nearly empty stomach

2.  The CBG and related world is not at all just Cigar Box Nation.  Far from it.  Since the nearest CBG players are more than 40 miles away- CBN is about 80% of my CBG world.

4. Interests ebb and flow.   CBGers do other things - well most of em do!

5,  Creativeness ebbs and flow too.

As for Gitty building or not.  I don't really care.  At least the stuff he is selling is good stuff.   When people buy a poorly made CBG it kind of hurts us all.

As for me building, I am TRYING to quit unless I have an order- which seldom happens.      Too bad, because I love to build.   I think that all but a few of us need to build for fun, not for attempted profit.

You are right on your comment about building for fun Uncle John. I think if you took a realistic listing of the hours and materials I have in most of my builds I would be lucky to make $5.00 an hour if I was to sell them for $200.00 and that would be on the simple builds. The one I'm working on right now probably has over 60 hours of work in it and i probably will have another 40 hours in it when I get done. I don't rush them, but savor the creation.

I get a lot of pleasure out of the building and more when I hear a friend play them.
