Thanks for the picture. That makes perfect sense now. I had the wrong concept in my brain.

I bolted mine together and just drilled 1" holes on the ends that matched up. Dont know if the holes made any difference or not. I'd be sure there are sound holes in all the boxes, tho. But not big ones. The stick on the top of the boxes is going to kill some of the sound, so you don't want to sacrifice your remaining surface area to a fancy sound hole.

Folks often cut little viaducts on the bottom of the neck so that there it is not touching the box the whole way down the length of the instrument. You might be able to see this on the pix of Randy's three-box dulci, if you can find the side view.

Here's the deal. I bought three cigarboxes today to make a dulcimer out of. I want to put them together end to end. Here are a couple of questions. How do I handle the partitions made by the ends being together. I realize, I think, that I need to cut out a portion of the middle ends but how much? Also how long is too long. Is it like making a CBG and there are no rules? Is there some place I could go to learn more about making them?

Nice work Mike! I have a grandaughter (going on two) I can't wait to get her to start playing. It will be a nice accompany her on Itsy Bitsy Spider!

I just finished my 6yr old grandaughter's CBG using the diatonic scale. The total length is about 26 inches long. It has an 18" scale. And of course, she wanted a "Pink Guitar." So I tried to make it so that she'll still like when she is older.

Hey Tim ... I'm gonna go out on a limb here...
Find a set of real dulcimer strings.
Even tho' I do use Darco guitar strings for the most part, if you want the mtn. dulci sound you can't touch the way dulci strings work.
I problem ... they are loop end. I just strung the string thru and put a finishing nail thru all 3 loop at one time.

If you know your length from nut to bridge and you know what tuning you want, you can use this and buy individual strings:

I just built a 3 string Dulci strummer. What would be the best string configuration to get a sound similar to the typical mountain dulcimer?
