Yup yup. And to set intonation at the nut you want to lower the strings in the slots until the first fret plays the correct note without sharpening, so if your string is a G when open, your first fret should be a bang on G#

A floating bridge will allow you to tweak the intonation as well. Tune up, check the intonation harmonics at the 12th fret, then play the string, fretted, at the 12th fret. If it is sharp, move the bridge towards the tail until the harmonic matches the fretted string, then re-tune.

You will get a load of different answers to this, but ballpark string height: .8mm-1.9mm at the first fret, 2.5mm-2.8mm at the 12th. But I usually just fuss around with the nut & saddle height until it feels right.

... And the correct height at the bridge would be as close as you can get to the frets without the strings buzzing. This would normally be about 2 to 3 millimetres.

Well Jerry, that would depend if you were planning a fretless or fretted build. if you're using frets the correct height for the nut would be whatever's sufficient to give correct intonation. if the action is too high at the nut the notes on the lower frets will sharpen and the guitar will play out of tune. if you're using a slide this doesn't matter as much.

To add along to the theme of this conversation, is there a recommended/suggested/acoustically-correct action height at the nut and the bridge. I've just been using what ever the diameter of the bolts I use. Thanks in advance.

Once the git is built, there's not any easy way to adjust the action aside from Richey's advice. Best is to consider it up front. Neck stiffness and angle are huge factors, taking into account the number and type of strings, neck length, thickness, box structure, etc. Enjoy!

That would normally be done by lowering the nut and bridge Thomas.

Thanx for all the positive guys- I am real proud of it. I have alot of woodworking experience but never tackled anything like this and have never played a guitar. 3 days playing with and what a gas!!! The box is Bald Cypress from a tree that came down many years ago on my place. Neck is red oak(Laurel) from likewise and fretboard Eucalyptus from a friends place in N. FL. I have a small saw mill and am able to sample alot of wood down here in FL. Strings are from CBGGitty-medium G set-tuned G-D-G. Plays great acoustically- I made it with resonator so I might someday jam with some bluegrass friends. Not sure if it still will be loud enough but my friends are already blown away by it(none have played one before) and even though they snub any amp playing have already changed when they played this. Have small amp and it just sounds REALLY great with that.
