I got 2 nice cigarboxes off Fleabay with a great big label stuck to the fronts of the boxes I managed to remove the labels but it's left lines of very sticky residue left , any one have any bright idea's how to remove it ? , these are unfinished wood so don't want to use my normal method on varnished boxes which is to use simple Olive Oil so I'm afraid that it will soak into the wood and spoil the box and react with what ever finish I decide to put on the box .

Denatured alcohol?? I've used it to clean up some old furniture that had no protective finish. Alcohol provides temporary moisture for scrubbing, but evaporates cleanly and doesn't cause the wood to get "fuzzy" like water & Murphy's Oil Soap. I used it because I didn't want to sand the piece and destroy years of patina.

BIG CAVEAT: Who knows how the alcohol will react with your "sticky residue" or if it will dissolve it at all.

I've also used a commercial product called "Goof Off" to remove some tough stains and glue. I can't tell what it is exactly or how it's working, but I haven't noticed it damaging the wood. (I used it very sparingly.)

Thanks for that , so would that be Methylated Spirits to us in the UK ?

Sounds right. I think methyl alcohol is added to make the product unusable for consumption (to avoid our tax requirements).

Also don't know the availability of Goof Off. In the US they're selling it in quantity at the home stores, but its chemical makeup may make it difficult to export. (I've really got no idea what's in it, but it works great on some glues and residues.)

Thanks but it's not a great help naming US products to us in the UK

No, but it may help others. ;-)  even us C'najuns !!!

 Yes of course  : )

White spirit or methylated spirit is the same as what we in the US call denatured alcohol. Products like Goof-Off are naphtha based, and that's what I use. I get naphtha in gallon cans at my local home improvement store, in the paint department. The naphtha found in the paint department has additives in it to dilute it. If you want the pure stuff, or can't find the diluted stuff, you can use lighter fluid for wick-type cigarette lighters - like the Zippo brand. That's 100% pure naphtha. Obviously, work with any kind of naphtha in a well-ventilated area, away from sparks or flame, and don't smoke while you're using it.

Alcohol will remove some adhesives, but not all. Naphtha will remove just about all adhesives used on wood cigar boxes. It won't hurt the finish either. The only adhesive naphtha and alcohol both will have problems with is the adhesive used to glue the paper labels onto the boxes. That adhesive is basically water-based paste.

To get the label off without leaving a whole lot of residue behind, try warming the label with a hair dryer or a heat gun set on low. Heat will soften the adhesive and make removing the label a lot easier.

I'm with you, Rusty. I've used lighter fluid for years. It works and leaves no residue. Leave it on the label for about a minute, then start peeling the label.

use a hairdryer to remove labels, but residue can  be removed with a little white spirit on a white cloth or tissue (-:

Thanks for the reply's   , I used White Spirit and as they say the goo is gone it did discolour the backs so I wiped it all over to get a uniform colour .

White spirits is not denatured alcohol, it is what we call mineral spirits here in the US.

The good news is that, being the primary solvent in most commercial finishes, it shouldn't negatively impact any stain or varnish you plan to use.

Oops, you're absolutely right. That's what I get for going by memory and not checking first. Methylated spirit is what we call denatured alcohol. White Spirit is what we call Mineral Spirits. Thanks Robert.
