Question... How are you embedding photos such as the one directly below? I don't get any controls for this. I am trying to do this on an iPad. Is it something that is maybe just not showing up for me?

Rusty and Martin:

I put the mitre box together today, tested it, and then cut slots for a guitar fretboard in about 5-10 minutes.  It saves me about 4 hours for every guitar/uke neck I make.

Thanks again

Wow.  Thanks Rusty and Martin!  That is fantastic.  I am going to make 2 different fretboards:  A 650 mm scale guitar and a concert uke.  I'll have to make the originals the old fashioned way, except that I have built a nice mitre box.  Life will definately get easier.

Thanks again

Gary

Here's a link to the fret slotting jig I made. The main difference between this one and the jig Martin made is the razor blade. If you're not trying to copy a fretboard, eliminate the razor blade and you're set. The video Martin is talking about is linked at the bottom of this page:

Here's the saw I use. It's cheap, easy, and perfect - much like me...

It appears to work very well.  Thanks for the inspiration.  It should cut the fret slotting time to a third of what it was.

Martin,

I didn't understand quite what to do after building the mitre box.  I built mine, then clamped a block of oak on edge to the top to use as a saw guide.  Then I made sure the block was square in both axis' and sawed my slot.  I'll try it now on a neck scrap.

Thanks,

Gary

The secret of this jig is, after making a simple mitre box , is to cut off , about 2" on a chop saw or similar, push up the off cut to the saw & fix to the base plate , this will insure your saw cut will be as close to 90° to the fret board as poss, then of course work out the depth.

Martin,

You have some nice jigs there.  I looked at your fret slot cutting jig and made a crude copy of it last night.  I am going to go to the store and buy some oak to make one for myself.  1 1/2" x 3/4" -the same as my necks.  I am going to fret a couple of necks in the next few days.  The fretboard needs to fit in the jig pretty snugly, but loose enough to be moveable.  Maybe I should wax the inside rails?

And a depth stop is clamped to the pull saw blade.

I tried it both with and without a very thin shim between the bottom and one side.  It seems to work better without the shim.

another bottle cutting jig, bottle is rotated by hand = natch! then hot / cold water technique, give a tap & clean up sharp edges.
