Ted, I like the look of your stonehenge pups and being an (ex) telecoms engineer would love to have a go at making my own for my three stringers. Can you give me some basics like what type of magnets, wire guage and how many turns needed. I appreciate you sell them and might not want make this public though. Won't be offended if you prefer not to discuss them. Thanks

Thank you very much for this Ted, brilliant stuff, much appreciated. I just need to source the hardware in the UK now, then I'll have a crack at it. I don't suppose the type of wood used for the bobbin matters much does it. I saw the 'Honeydripper' film, loved it. You must feel dead proud to have your guitar on there. Cheers David (smojo)
Ted, fantastic offer, very much appreciated. Let me see what I can find here first, haven't looked yet. I'll get back to you on it but it may be after Christmas now - going to be pretty busy this week. Thanks again.
Ted, I found this UK supplier of magnets but not sure which type/size would be suitable for PUPs. Here's links to two different ones - neodymium ones here

and alnico 5 ones here

The neodymium ones seem better value for money but what's the difference in performance between the two types please?

cheers, David (smojo)
yikes the hyperlink function didn't work, maybe have to copy & paste instead.

Now for some wire - I found this UK site, does this stuff look OK. It's standard enamelled and solderable wire. Also how many 3 string pups could you wire with a 500g reel (that's just over 1 pound weight)
Thanks again for some great info. Don't know why the hyperlink function doesn't work here. This was the wire I found.

hey ted, this seems the be the best place to ask a couple of novice questions as far as pick-ups go. It seem that a lot of folks make single coils instead of humbuckers on cbg. Is there a reason for that? I guess maybe a single coil has a muddier sound? Also can a single coil or humbucker pick up on regular bronze acoustic strings or do you need to use electric strings, bronze phosphorus or something else? the last question I have is regarding blade pick-ups. It seems by making a blade style pick-up that you would eliminate having to worry about how many pole pieces and thus how many strings that you have on any cbg. this seems like a versatile style of pick-up. Does the performance decrease with these type of pups?
Great thread this. Thanks Ted, for the info and smojo for the research into uk suppliers. Having followed this i'm going to order some magnets and wire and have a go!

Dom
Dom - be sure to let us know how you get on. Haven't got time just yet to have a go but definitley will be doing in the sometime.
Ok, so I have my magnets, wire and made some bobbins from purple heart - not copying you for sake of it, Ted, but I have some lying around and it's a good hardwood & ideal for these small parts. I have a question: I have read that it's not critical whether the magnets are north or south up, but do I need to change how i wind the coil according to the magent orientation? Most advice i see says start on the left and wind clockwise (presumably looking from the top). Do i need to worry about this if I'm only using a single coil? Can I wind it either way then reverse the hot & ground wires according to the orientation of the magnets? All advice most appreciated.

Dom
Thanks, Ted. I'll put the flatwork and magnets together and then design & build my coil winder. I'm planning to build a jig with a hand drill, magnet & reed switch to count turns - I've seen a webpage on how to 'adapt' a calculator to do this. Will post photos.

Dom
Damn Ted,,,,your good...hope all is well...
