Ceramic Body Guitar Demo - CBG - Cigar Box Guitar Inspired

Hello my friends, it's been a long time since I posted. After many attempts at building a full fledged 4 string CBG with a ceramic body, I finally got a body that made it through the kiln firings without warping or cracking. I finished this up a couple months ago but was too busy with the holiday rush on my business to make a video of this guitar until now. I hope you enjoy it. Music starts 45 seconds in, and there's a slide show of pictures I took along the making process. Thanks for watching!

Thank you so much Jerry! That was the most carving I've ever done on a neck. :)

Thanks Greg! Yep, you hit the nail on the head. the interior bracing is to keep the top flat. I had some bad warping on prior attempts. It's hard to keep ceramic slabs totally flat through the firing processes. I also fired it with the top down so it wouldn't sag, and that meant I couldn't use conventional glaze on top because it would fuse to the kiln shelf. Instead I used an engobe stain and a frit wash that gave it a sealed, satin matte type surface finish. Anyway, enough pottery talk. Yes, figuring out how to join the neck took a few months of mental gymnastics in the back of my head. It's hard to explain how I joined it, but it's sort of braced, pegged, and shimmed in. It's very solid for my personal use, but I'd be afraid to ship it assembled.

Hey Janis,
That's cool! Nice warm sound and it rocks out, too.
Was the interior walls for stability of the sound board? Is that where you had warping? Good job with joining the neck to the body, that can be real tricky with ceramics... Oh, and I liked the playing, too!
Agree with earlier comments about the denim texture and color, very folky vibe.

Thank you Jim! If I'm not mistaken you also encouraged me to take on sculpting a ceramic guitar body. I almost gave up a couple times on building this 4 string, but I'm glad I stuck with it.
