My 3-string CBG is on order, and honestly, I haven't even started playing yet, but I'm already thinking about stuff I'd like to learn. I'm an old skool rocker here. There are a number of older Aerosmith tunes that I think would sound cool in the old delta blues style, and I'm not having much luck finding any CBG stuff of Aerosmith online. So these are the tunes that I think could be interpreted rather nicely on a CBG. What do you guys think? I'd love to hear very original CBG versions of this stuff:

Just remember that your 3 string CBG is tuned open to a 1-5-1(root-fifth-root) note progression. That is just like playing Rock Power Chords, so you can play the rhythm chords for any of your Rock favorites. Can't do any lead or Arpeggios, but a slide can help with adding some embellishments.

Your tuning will determine the songs you'll be playing best. For example: DAD is better for songs in key of E and D while GDG would be better for songs in G or A.

Obviously, I have lots to learn here. I'm completely new to tuned instruments. I played the drums relentlessly for years though, so I have a great musical basis to start from.

I have a question (so forgive my complete and total ignorance here). How do you know what "key" a song is in? When you listen to any song, how do you determine which key it's in? Any of the above songs I listed...how would I know what key they are in? As a beginner, I'll be tuned GDG for quite awhile just to get my bearings...so how would I know which of the above songs is in that key or not...because I think for awhile, I'm going to be sticking with GDG.

Also, I am hearing that often when you switch tunings, it's also good to switch strings, as some tunings work better with different strings coming out of a 6 string set. I'm a beginner, and don't even know how to string one of these yet, let alone tune it (I bought a Snark tuner, BTW). So I am assuming the reason alot of guys have multiple CBG's is because often they have them set at different tunings?

School me here...

This will help explain alot. Songs will have a 1-3-5 or 1-4-5 progression. 1 will be your key/root chord and the others will be your 3rd, 4th and 5th and so on. This site has some lessons and music theory. Also tabs for songs and the associated chords.

Certain string are better for certain tuning's. Most of my Cbg's are 4 stringers tuned G-D-G-B and I used the 4 middle strings of a 6 string pack. A string tuned down to G(my root note), D string to D( my 5th), G string tuned to G(another root note an octave higher) and the B string tuned to B( my 3rd). Gives me a 1-5-1-3, full chord with an extra root. a 4th string  can allow for 4th and 7th chords with some finger stretching. I can tune my low G back up to A(A-D-G-B) and play a lot of Zepplin, ZZ Top or a lot of Blues songs that use A bar chords. I can even do some high D with some tuning changes.

If I wanted to tune to E or D, then I would either go with the 4 lowest/bigger strings or the 4 highest/smaller strings.

Your choice of string for designated tuning should be based on close proximity to what is desired. General rule of thumb is a string can be tuned up or down 3 or 4 steps/frets for regular fret boards before breaking or being too floppy to play. So a 3 stringer in D could use the lowest 3 strings(E-A-D) could be tuned to D-A-D or tuned to E-B-E for a E tuning.

Hope that helps and gives you some ideas.

Some people make multiple CBG's for different tunings or you can make a double neck. Possibilities are endless. Do some Goggle searches on topics and ask us questions, we will help as much as we can. Don't let it intimidate you and don't get lost in all the music theory. It's good to know, but sometimes you can just play what sounds good to you and be fine.

LOL, for me, you're bordering on speaking Chinese here. Love to hear all that explained for 3-string. I'm just going to stick with GDG for now, until I feel like I'm getting somewhere, and I'll slowly go from there. I'm just gonna play what sounds good...get my bearings on things first I guess.

Paul,

I'm going to ask you again...How do you know what "key" a song is in? When you listen to any song, how do you determine which key it's in?

The song Big Ten Inch shows chords A-D-E and variants of those chords in minor and 7ths. D and E are 4th and 5th of A, making A the root/key in a 1 - 4 - 5 progression.

It can be confusing.

This is not the heavy reading it appears to be at first glance Snuffy, once you get your guitar, work through these exercises a bit, it clarifies a lot----http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profiles/blog/show?id=2592684%3ABlogP...

Thanks! I just bookmarked that page. I'll have to check it out when my CBG arrives.

Found a variation of an Aerosmith tune played on CBG finally! This guy does a nice job on it too. Hangman Jury by Aerosmith:

if you google the song and add "tab" you may get some good results . tab is short for tablature. its a graphic way of showing what notes to play. tab is basically like looking down on the guitar fretboard. a quick google for Hangman Jury turned up this

go for the second version in what is called dropped d.. dont worry about what that means just yet. for this song it means it set for a DAd tuning.  also dont let this bother you either DAd is just a different key to GDg you can play these notes on your GDg git you will just be playing the song in G instead of D.... its very confusing at first until you get your head around the basic concepts.  guitar is based around note patterns whereas drums are based around rhythm patterns. check the how to play page on this site

 http://www.cigarboxnation.com/page/how-to-play-cbg

might give you a start. also check out Glens one finger songs.. a great start to getting going.

any song can be transposed to a different key.

2 key things for helping pick out what key a song is in,

1) look for the 'resolve' note at the end of a phrase.  it will almost always drop to the root note of the key.  sort of the release of tension.  Folsome Prison Blues "but that train keeps on rolling on down to San-An-Tone" runs down to the root.

2) look at which chords in the song are major or minor.  the pattern is always 1Major 2minor 3minor 4Major 5Major 6minor 7diminished 8Major.  the 1 is the key and root.

http://www.classic-country-song-lyrics.com/milkcowblueslyricschords...

Milk cow blues seems to be in G , G is all strings open( not touched or fretted) C is all strings fretted at the 5 fret( just behind the fifth fret) and the D7 you can fret all strings at the 7th fret. you will be playing a D "power chord" as you cant easily add the 7th.
