Why do I make videos? Why do I get comments? Why does some of the best stuff get few comments?

Why do I make videos?

It is fun to play and sing  just for my self.   But sometimes many players and singers want an AUDIENCE.   In fact, we would like an audience that pays some attention - more like a concert  than playing a bar or restaurant and being pretty much back ground music.

Thanks to CBN, I have an audience.   Better yet, it is a friendly and tolerant audience.

I also enjoy learning new songs and playing them.  Some times they get added to my repertoire and some times they are soon forgotten.

CBN videos are also a song writer's community.

Why do I get comments and some likes?

CBN is a social network.  I try to  responds to other folk's videos, photos and posts.  I develop friends and relationships.  Some of those folks tend to respond back to my posts.  A social network is a bit like real life.

Additionally, I try not to waste people's times.  I edit the vid so you don't have to wait 20 seconds for the content to start.   I often post lyrics and chords with vids.  People like that.   No matter how clear the singer puts out the lyrics, folks will not hear them all clearly.

When I post a photo, I try to put up info.  I try to tell the truth.  Not everything I build plays well!

Why does some of the best stuff get few comments?

Again, it is a social network.   Something good will get looks and comments at least the first few times the person post.  .  If the poster does not respond to others, he or she soon gets few comments back.

I agree totally, especially about how cool your videos are. The lyrics and chords are a great way to share the song in addition to the video. Also, it is worth noting that there are reasons to post video that does not require a ton of views and comments. I tend to worry less about how many views and more about the comments I do get. I hope for hints to improve and enjoy the encouragement. But in truth I have played to large rooms of people to receive no real feed back, so 3 comments is often a lot to a guy like me. I also agree that a part of getting people to look is to look yourself. It shows that you are interested in more than just the receiving end of communication.Anyway, I also need to say that I for one watch those who I enjoy weather they watch me or not and I got to say unc, you are one of the more compelling people here to watch. You work hard and sing from the heart and have an honesty to this music you love that comes across on video. Add to that that you continue to grow as a writer and singer as well as player and I find your musical trajectory to be a fun view. So I do not think you need to explain it all away like there is an explanation that does not involve you being one damn talented singer/performer. I'm just saying....matt

Thanks, Matt.   I agree with most all of that and I watch for and I'm pleased to see certain people posting vids or photos.

And yes, having fun comes across.    I have a neighbor man in his mid 80s that will infrequently come to a jam or open mic.   He is not one of the best players or singers.  But has a blast and it seems like everyone enjoys him the most.

yup  ;-)

I often don't reply because I have nothing to say. Maybe I should reply anyway....wait..... I just did.

Good job, Patrick!   You replied!

Truly,  you are one that teaches and gives more than he takes.

Yup I agree with you Unc about Patrick's contributions. I'm a bit glad about his limited comments - he might be too honest and my feelings are fragile. Unc you know I dig your posts, playing, and song writing and always try to watch whatever you put up. There are about a dozen others that I always look at even when I'm busy. BUG, Clock, Bemusic, turtlehead, RTZ, matt b, shane w. and several others. I know I've missed some really great vids by others simply due to a lack of time but when I see you or some other folks make positive comments on one's I missed, I go back and try to catch them. Capt Nemoff is one I missed and then had to go back and watch a bunch of. My own posts are usually to show new builds. Yeah there's a certain amount of "Look what I did" in it but more important to me is somebody thinking "that's cool, I'd like to try that" Anyway it's great to have a bunch of supportive, like minded, creative people to bounce stuff off of.

Jim, your vids put a smile on my face even before I play them.  And after I play them too.  Your list matches mine pretty close.  Turtle seems to be in my top two.   Vinylhed is up there and many of James O's.   Others too.  A lot of it is just my taste in music.

Yeah, I knew if I started naming names I'd go "man I should have also said this person and that person" My favorites are the real sounding folks and James O is one of them. I also like the folks that do overdubs and have crazy video editing skills - I just don't know how to do that stuff and gravitate towards people that you could easily be sitting in the room with them listening and maybe playing along with. Talking about this has brought Jamie Mac to mind. Do we know how he's doing?

I see a comment from Jamie, now and then.  Will put him back in my prayers for at least one.  Old Jamie is a fun, funny and talented good guy.

And to note Uncle John, you are as good live as your are in your videos.

Cause, that is generous, because you rocked the house at last summer's KC CBG fest.  I would like to hear some vids from you.

I think this is a very interesting post. I appreciate the perspective of people who post. I'm am very impressed by those who perform and put the work out there for others to view. It takes guts to do that!
As for me, I'm new to all this. I'm not a musician, but I try to comment on the things that really move me. I try to be sincere when I comment. Sometimes I'm not sure and reserve comment.
Social media can be intimidating for new folks. We come into an established realm where folks know each other and already have a report. New members are on the outside of inside jokes or jargon that they haven't figured out yet.
This has been my experience in the things that I have ventured into. Fortunately, this site is welcoming and helpful. I can't say that for evey experience I've had visiting sites that cater to certain interests.
I would bet there are more members like me then many may realize.
Great topic! Thanks,
Greg
