I got a couple of friends wanting to buy a CBG and want me to built them one. They really liked mine and want them fretted too. My initial plans was to sell a few frettless CGBs because the are faster to build. I personaly think they look better fretted.  I've already decided on a price  but what is the markup from frettless to fretted ? It takes about 1 extra nite for me to fret one so I only lose one day of build time. I build these in my spare time working on my kitchen table and going back and forth to an open carport for use of my power tools. I don't have a deadline. I see them from 69-150.00 on ebay and craigslist. I know this is a taboo subject so no answer is ok....lol

I usually charge £15.00  extra for fretting a fretless - £5 for the wire and £10 for the hour's  work :-)

Thanks I was thinking 15-20 extra

Given the he extra care, skill, and increased playability, I would say $50....not to mention the potential to goof something g up... Or am I the only one that screws up the occasional neck? :-)

Fretting is a lot of extra work imho, 50-75 bucks for sure

I agree with John & Bluesheart...$50 is about right. It's more than just measuring & cutting slots and putting in the frets. There's filing the ends, leveling, dressing, and the added fun of adjusting the bridge to get the intonation spot on...that is what a customer wanting a fretted guitar will look for.

Pricing our work is a tough call, indeed. In the end, of course, its up to you what you feel is fair. Cheers and keep making sawdust.

pricing is a difficult thing to decide - price too high you'll never sell anything, price to low and you'll be working for nothing....best way is prepare templates and buy machine tools to tackle as many jobs as you can, organise your workshop so everything is near at hand in a few seconds and work as quickly as you can,  build two or three models the same not all different ones, my first guitar took weeks a few years ago, now nearing 90 builds  I can make three fretted models in a weekend! :-)

also I might add if you buy your parts and materials in bulk you will make savings on postage, and stick with reliable suppliers, if you run out of anything a regular supplier will be more likely to get stuff to you the next day if you're stuck - it happens !  if you add up the cost of all your parts, say £70 or £80,  and add fifty pounds or so for labour  you'll be around the right figure, if you do three of these in a weekend including 20 - 24  hours glue drying time between each stage that's £150 labour (less advertising fees) still not a bad weekend's work, and maybe only 8 hours actually working!

Fretting decently adds value and play ability invest in good tools take your time lots of great how to videos on you tube

Nice work, Steve.  I admire people who can do 'production line' stuff and maintain consistency.  I can't.  I tried but I got bored after No2 and started making mistakes and not enjoying it.  Looks like you've got a good system worked out !
