In 1974, my father dissected a domestic box turtle as part of a college course. Decades later, its shell reemerges as the main part of the "Turtle Shell Ukulele".

The neck is soprano scale (13") and is made of maple. The space between the neck and the shell serves as the sound hole.

@turtlehead

This ukulele isn't super loud, but it does have a folksy sound.  My turtle shell didn't have the flat bottom part (it was cut off years ago), but having that would probably make it more responsive.

Love it!  I've been thinking of something similar, but using the shell for the soundboard.  Does it resonate at all?

No way! Fantastic use of an old turtle, which is a phrase I have never used before. Thanks for the opportunity!!! Very cool.
