Original little waltz for my long time sweet-pea. I've been playing at nursing homes of late and felt like I needed a couple of waltz tunes in my repertoire. So....

As the campfire slowly burned to ash and embers, the dogies settled down for the night. Overhead, the stars twinkled in a midnight sky, and a cool breeze fanned the buffalo grass into repeating oceanic swells. The Cap'n's craggy face was briefly lit with the flicker of a half-chewed cheroot, like lightning had decided to touch down between the bushy brows that appeared to support the curled, stained brim of his battered Stetson. Charlie humped himself into his bedroll, and soon was snoring off-key with the harmonica. Across the fire, Fancy Dick stared into the flames between his crossed boot heels, absentmindedly flicking a copper-steel pocket watch in and out of the front pocket of his silver brocade vest. Curly James fiddled with his Colt, spinning the drum, checking for infinitesimal grains of sand, before looking up suddenly, with a wicked grin spreading beneath his handlebar moustach.

"That's purty, John," said Curly James softly, as a coyote acknowledged the rising moon. "Whaddaya call that?"

The firelight flickered in "Uncle" John Bolton's 3-dollar spectacles, as the mouth organ's final notes faded into the sagebrush.

"Linda's Waltz," husked John. "You know...fer her<\I>..."

The Cap'n spat a stream of cheroot juice into the embers. "Fine woman," he nodded sadly. "Too bad about...well...you know..."

A single tear rolled from beneath John's spectacles, to disappear into his weather-seamed face like an unlucky rain on the desert.

Jose's bushy head appeared whistling from around the corner of the chuckwagon.his bird like piping cut off abruptly as he noted the somber faces lit by the mesquite embers.

"I theenk mebbe no one want a slice of pecan pie," he whispered resignedly.

In the distance, a herd of buffalo stampeded through the sky; the winter storms would be here soon.
