1.My son came to me, as I put up the tree, said "dad, can we have a talk
That Fender last year, that cost you so dear, helped me play some Chuck Berry Rock
But I hear old train whistles calling, I can hear those old drifters sing
Every time you play your old "dogbowl" guitar, and I'm wondering what this Christmas, -this Christmas may bring

2.I said " son, you don't need to go fishing, if its a three string you're wanting this time
Its a present that's cheap, won't make my pay packet weep, and I'll build it with steel or with pine
But a three string is often life changing, or so I hear some people say
So before I build you your own three string , there's someting that I want to say

3. Well I built my son his own three string, he played it near all Christmas day
He played it at night, and by next morning's light, he was still strumming away
He tried a little bit of "slidin", I could hear the blues there and I smiled
And someday his own son might say "dad can we talk?", and he'll say "son, just just listen, -just listen awhile
