Cigar Box ukes tend to be quiet in my experience, the ply tops are just too stiff to resonate freely when driven by nylon strings, but steel strings put a lot more downforce on the top and 'drive' it properly. Fret spacing is calculated in the normal way but just using a diatonic scale.

I really like these strunstick style guitars, the diatonic scale pushes you into playing in a different way (you can always bend the strings to get those missing semitones)..and the dulcimer style tuning is great for simple accompaniment of songs, using a drone/melody style of playing. This one sold within an hour of it going up on eBay!
