Welcome Al...I just joined the Ohio group yesterday. You do some really nice work. I especially like the Brass Lass. Is that hinge you used for a tailpiece just a stock home depot/lowes type item? I noticed you're a big fan of the "Dulci" fretting. That's what I'm currently working on.

Hi Al,
Well, when i made the uke i didn't have a taperer so i tapered them as best i could by hand. I have in the mean time bought a taperer and will redo these pegs to give them a better fit. They are quite thin and i had used old bobbins. The wood of these was quite dry but if you were to buy some new ones, it would probably be do-able. I too love the look of them. Good luck with your building and send me a note if you use them and let me know how it came out. BTW, there are more video's of me on 'The Uke Box' youtube channel. Enjoy!

Hi Al,
Thanks for your comments. My peg tuners are made out of lace bobbins.
You can find them online. Here is a link:

Hey man. In response to your bridge question, it's a piece of stainless steel tubing and a couple of tubing clips.... Great aesthetic and sounds good.

Al, I'll be interested in hearing about the uke build and seeing photos. I'd like to try it, but I think I'll get a little more knowledge and ability before I attack that monster.

hey al my scale length on the whiskey d-bows are 24.75 scale. but they could be made with any scale length.the dowells start out at a 36 inch length but i usually cut them down after i figger out the proportion of the overall instrument. i usually leave 3-4 inches on either end of the build, but that is just my way it don't have to be cut at all. i use 2 different size dowells the whiskey d-bows have the larger size dowell which is a 1 in. dowell. on some of the cigar box builds i use dowells that are 3/4 in. like the vintage san felice build i,m workin on right now has the 3/4 in. dowells in it. take care al---talk wit ya later.

hello al, i got those whiskey canisters on e-bay fer a good price[bout 50 cents each] and the string is an acoustic string that would be about the size of the A string in a set of 6. i have not checked the tuning of it but you can tune it to just about any note you want to as long as you don,t get it real tight. on these i,m using old banjo tuners and they work out great for this application.

Thank you Al. Bubba would love for me to take him riding, but me and him both can't fit in the trike at the same time. He loves to ride anything---tractors, golf carts, trucks. It is alot of fun riding the trike as you know.

Thanks Al,
This was my first one from scratch (I made a similar one with pre-existing tines from an old toy piano) i just threw this together quickly to see how the spokes were going to resonate. I don't have the lengths with me right now but the smallest one is tuned to C and then i pretty much just added an inch to each spoke. The thing is, if you bow the spokes you can get about three different frequencies from each one, plus it's really easy to "bend" each note by about a half-step. I plan on trying to perfect these so I'll keep you posted if i figure out how the length of the spoke corresponds to the frequency created.

You guessed correct. I got the pick up from Ted Crocker and then tried to find an old steel licence plate with no luck. My local junk store sold me about 8 old saws for a buck each. My son plays his cigar box guitar and sometime uses the saw stomp box. It was my first attempt as you can see. Had to keep changing mountings to get some base sounds out of it.
