Hi Andries. Both hinges are brass plated steel, but the broken one was very light duty, like for a little box.  I also tend to throw them in the fire after chemical treatment to make them look like a relic.  I think the heat treatment was the cause of failure on the little hinge.  The big one will not fail!

Hi Andries, great to hear your slides arrived safe. I like to use strings with plain wire. Some must be wound, but as many plain as allowed. Nickel rockers are good. I've been playing in open G and C6. Each uses different gauge strings. I suppose flat wound would be good, but i've not tried them. Have fun! ... Dave
