Making some canjos for our school, need to know how can is mounted and how the string is mounted to the can. Is there a special way that works best or just use our imagination. thank you Chuck

HE He Tammi. You can also use any vegetable can. Large green bean cans are great. There are so many ones you can build.<br />

We've started a canjo group on Cigar Box Nation called "Canjo Consortium". If you found this thread about building canjos, then you will probably be interested in joining our group. From the diagram above, I see they recommend a pan head screw for a slotted nut. Nice idea.

I'm pretty late to this topic, but I have a couple of quick questions and as odd as it seems, I can't seem to find much info on canjos other than to buy them. And really, where's the fun in that?<br />
<br />
Okay so what type of string and guage does one use? also, what keeps the string from 'cutting' through the bottom of the can when tensioned?

I have been giving canjoe instruments to sick kids of children's hospitals for many years and continue to do so on a regular basis. I have been giving canjoe instruments to sick kids of children's hospitals for many years and continue to do so on a regular basis. Besides losing my dear and long time friend, Herschel Brown, to cancer last year, my wife, who gave me the name I'm now best known by, also died at age 39 from cancer, 15 years ago. By her inspiration, 3 years ago, I embarked full time on a special children's hospital tour called the "Tour of Smiles" where I have now become certified as a child life specialist special events entertainer for several children's hospitals. Herschel Brown was a staunch supporter of the "Tour of Smiles" before his passing. The Tour of Smiles Affiliation, Inc (TOSA) was chartered as a nonprofit corporation on January 1, 2009 for the purpose of providing music instruments (that could also include CBGs or any others, does not limit what these kids receive to just canjoes), special musical events and programs to benefit these kids and their family members. Herschel was made a memorial member of the BOD after his passing and the "Tour" is continued in his memory as well as in memory of my wife, and others). It would be nice if the CBGers would also help support TOSA. The canjoes that are currently being provided to these kids who receive them on the Tour of Smiles are of the highest quality, most accurately built instruments of their type. I've posted a blog on this site about canjoes and welcome anyone to comment or contribute. There is far more to making canjoes accurately and making them safe (for instance, cutting and mounting cans properly) than drawings or written descriptions can depict. I support your good intent and cause but canjoes really must be built right and by experienced crafters before they should be distributed into the hands of these kids.
