Shane Speal Recording Blog - Day 8 and 9: Plowing ahead

Shane Speal's Snake Oil Band - upcoming album on C. B. Gitty Records

Equinox Music and Arts Recording Studio, Dallastown PA

Songs worked on:  ...just about all of 'em!

First, some big news.  Shane Speal's Snake Oil Band featured on ABC...

So let's see...  This week, we plowed ahead with the rhythm tracks, adding more washtub bass and washboard to the songs I had tracked earlier.  It's interesting to see a washboard player play multiple tracks, layering several styles of playing on one song.  The washtub bass continues to be slamming as well.

(No cigar box guitar parts so far this week, but we plan on recording solos tomorrow.)

We also did some background and harmony vocals today.  Aaron Lewis is an incredible singer and he laid down some serious harmony on Simulated Sadie.  We all did more prison chants and the crazy Judy Gotta Booty chorus, too.

I think we're at 14 or 15 songs that will make the album.  I'm probably going to ditch Purple Rain. It's just not right for this project as of yet.

One more thing...  Aaron also recorded his blues version of Michael Jackson's Billie Jean.  I'll be adding cigar box guitar parts tomorrow.  Here's a glimpse of the SINGLE TAKE he nailed:

So there we are.  It's been meat and potatoes this week.  The fun cigar box guitar and harmonica solos are next.  YEAH!

Until next time,

Shane

Hey Shane!

I'm jumping into your blog a little late in terms of keeping current with your progress. Thank goodness for the little button that reads

I am stoked to see things moving along for you! Lewis sounded good in the vid you posted here. I drilled in a little further by watching a couple of the suggested vids at the end of the first. One of those suggestions had you playing a guitar from Ben's shop; the Old No. 7 gitty. No surprise here that you had it sounding great.

Good on you, good Sir! I look forward to seeing more of your posts here.
