Shane Speal's Snake Oil Band - recording an album for C. B. Gitty Records

Day four of recording

Equinox Music and Arts, Dallastown PA

Prison Chants and the Blues

Song worked on today:  Big Leg Woman/Swing the Hammer (written by Shane Speal)

Instruments:

  • Darren Brown 3 string cigar box guitar with an Elmar FlatPup pickup
  • Musicvox MVX15 amp
  • Pete Regan railroad foot stomper
  • Copperphone microphone
  • Shane Speal foot stomper

Well, we brought back the damn "click track" for just one more song.  I needed to use it to get the railroad stomper tracks nice and in sync.  This song is a mixture of blues imagery, prison chants and Old English nursery rhymes.  What's it about?  It's always about the boogie.

We multitracked a bunch of railroad foot stompers first to sound like a chain gang.  I then went back and recorded vocals, guitar and my foot stomper live on top of the railroad stomp.  Once that was done, I did all the chain gang singing at the end.

Here's an un-mixed glimpse of what's to come...

Great percussive hammers!!!  More Hammers, more hammers , More Hammers! :-)

I really like Shane's blog with the unfiltered view of a very entertaining, full energy & unorthodox musician trying to "color within the lines" to make these recordings.  Thanks Shane for sharing.
