My name is Uncle Gus. I play the three-string cigar box guitar.

It's been a while since I've come here.

There was a bit of traveling to do in December, which got in the way of making music. Then at the end of the month, my wife's mother passed away very suddenly. We were pretty close...not one of those typical antagonistic in-law relationships that provides fodder for bad sitcoms.

At any rate, her entire family is pretty spun out about it, and so am I. They lost a linchpin in their lives, and I lost a very good friend. I haven't felt much like playing music or building instruments, or doing anything but being sad and watching more television in two weeks than I usually watch in three months.

But there comes a time when you have to get back to the business and the habit of being alive, so I wanted to re-introduce myself and say, "Yeah, I'm still at large" to those who know me, and "Hi how are you?" to those who don't.

I'm Uncle Gus. I'm from Indiana, and I build janky three-string cigar box guitars and play the blues on them. I'm better at playing than building, which is good because I'm not that good at building. I write a lot of songs, and I've been working on an "album" for a while now. I was originally going to get it recorded and released on Bandcamp really quickly, but obviously that's on hold at the moment.

I've got a website at http://uncle-gus.com. There are six EP and "single" releases available for free download at that site, if you're into that kind of thing.

I'm planing on building a four-string fretted cookie tin soon, once I get some parts (and a prefab fingerboard...I'm not ready to install my own frets yet).

Thanks, c-boxers. Maybe this weekend I'll make some sounds to put up here in video form.

I sent some friend requests to those of you I didn't already have...I actually didn't realize I'd never done so with several of ya. The interface here is similar to MySpace back in the day, and I was just as bad at that, too. I had, like, nine friends or something.

Sorry about the loss and glad to see you back. Your records are on my computer all day longs with other players and I like what you are doing. Keep on playing and building guitars and to have this little garden to maintain and make growing is surely the best medicine you can get...

Thanks, guys. Music will be coming soon...right now my wife is in the next room absolutely cracking up at some TV show, and it's better than any music I've ever heard because it's been weeks since I've heard her laugh.

Gus,

Glad to have you back, and very sorry for your family's loss. Memorialize your relationship through music. Put the pain and grief into a song. Just let it come.
