Just wondering if I'm crazy or it's just a CBG thing. I buy a box then wait for it's design, anybody else do that? I know waiting on a box to tell you what it wants is a bit left field. Example, I picked up this sweet black Monte box the other day and I was thinking how sweet it would look with all gold hardware, ebony neck with a poplar fret board, gold frets, and gold fret dots. But for the likes of myself I can't seem to bring myself to cut this box yet. I've taped the ends three times now and just can't seem to put a saw to it. I love building CBG's as it allows me to get my mind off of the problems and just enjoy the freedom of building.

Guess I'll just have to wait till this box tells me what it want's tho all gold hardware would be oh so sweet on it. Anyway, anybody else have this problem?

And really I'm not crazy my mom had me tested!

Careful UJ, I travel for work so just might take you up on that some day. I have clients in Cedar Rapids and Fairfield Iowa.

I am a bit of a box and guitar hoarder myself, K.  Most of us are.   But stop by and I likely have some boxes and tins for you.

Well if any of you sentimental types don't want to agonize over whether to use a certain piece of  vintage bric-a-brac please feel free to send me a message and I'll give you my address so you can send it to me. Yes... I provide hoarder prevention services... free of charge... I must be some kind of saint...

Grandpa, I hope that yard stick will someday hang in the happy home of your great grand kids in a house that also holds and PLAYS gits you made.

Kigar, keep listening!

Hey Uncle, while I have builds I like and some not as much, I don't think a one of them has sworn at me yet, unless it is behind my back. Have to stop and listen when I turn out the light...

Uncle, I hear ya. I have accumulated a lot of old hardware, yardsticks, and a couple of "special" boxes, and I, too, often balk at using them for the purpose I acquired them for...git buildin'! That  little patina hinge, the old keyhole backing plate for a sound hole cover, and the really old yardsticks, always bought or picked up for buildin', then I don't want to let them go. Might never get another just like it! Case in point, a while back I got a 1964 Chevy dealer yardstick that lists all of the auto models available that year. The  printing is complete along a 17 1/2" section, perfect to use as a fretboard on an old Chevy vanity plate LPG with a 25" scale. I mean perfect!! But I just can't pull the trigger....yet. Maybe this Spring, but not quite yet. You know, these are quality problems. Thankfully Mrs. Grandpa can appreciate the difference between collectin' and hoardin'!

Good comments.  I try to study, imagine and listen to the box and use it in a good way.  It is starting to get where I don't like using the coolest vintage boxes or yard sticks and just want to save them.

It also seems like when the gits are done they want to be something different.   Like a 4 string fretless I have that seems to think it wants frets.  Or a two string hanging near by thinks it wants to come out of the closet and be a three string.   Or the briefly Five string that told me, "John, you stupid shit.  Put me back to a four string."

Maybe it is just shy or not ready yet. For me, some boxes seem to be obvious as to how to use  them, other times I have an idea and have to find or make a box.  Then I mix in trying to do something different each time, and time and skills come into play as well.

Grandpa, I know so far all of my builds have been what the box wants. But this box doesn't seem to want to tell me what it wants. Kinda like my wife, and if I want her to know I said that I'll tell her myself from the next state over.. lol. But all kidding aside I thought if I posted this someone might nudge in the right way to cause me to see/feel what this box wants. I agree one of the first things that I learned about CBG's, Good Times will follow!
