I gave up and bought a fret saw from stewmac, that and a decent set of nut slot files have made my life a whole lot easier.

DGAD sounds nice if you like a celtic folky sound.

1 you need a real thin blade.. I use a scroll saw, which works awesome.

2 I like gdgb with the fattest four from a regular set of guitar strings and a marginally shorter scale length (600mm)

You could tune it like a tenor guitar: CGDA and, to a lesser extent, GDAD, CGBD and DGBE.

Many open tunings: DF#AD (open D), DGBD (open G), etc. Tuning up or down, depending on string tension, or lack thereof...

What string gauges? Scale length?

New CBG T-Shirt!
