For The Aspiring Composers

A Little Help for The Aspiring Cigar Box Guitar Composer

My interest in cigar box guitars sure has taken some interesting twists and turns. Up to this point, I've focused mostly on building them, not so much on playing them.

I've dabbled with music composition in the past. I have always owned a guitar, and I think anyone with a passion for music…

Pickin one note at a time.

Don't really play anything (yet), but saw a video of a CBG and have started making one.

In the mean time I have tuned a Ukulele to the open G (GDgB) and picked out the Chorus to Casey Jones (Grateful Dead).

Help out and give us the rest or the full Tab for it if you'd like.

The .PDF says for 3 string but it would be the same when only…

Help - Still trying to figure out the notes and read music - open D tuning

I am still trying to figure out the notes on an open D, 4 string in relation to reading music scores.

Does the first D string note fall below the position shown on my chart?

Where is middle C on an open tuned 4 string CBG on the chart below?

So where do the high notes occur on a music score then or are the duplicates ?

If…

Brett’s Opinion on What to Look For in a Cigar Box Guitar

Cigar Box Guitars Have Soul - The look and sound of every CBG is unique and as different as the people playing them. So what may work great for me may not be the best fit for you.

Here are some basics that may be helpful in finding your perfect CBG.

Scale Size Matters - I have seen 5 year old children playing huge classical guitars like pros. So it is possible to adjust to the size and fret spacing of any guitar, but why should you? As a person with…

Different Types Of Festivals

I never gave it much thought as to what defined a festival. Was it just a get together of people celebrating some sort of theme like an open air carnival? I've heard music concerts converted into festivals. However, what I have learned recently is just how different everybody's festivals is. Some are held inside small pubs packed full of people, which is cozy eh! Where others look much like an open market place lined with vender booths and a stage for live performance and that can vary. Some…

CBG saved my musical life

I can't live without music, and playing music has always been a huge part of my life.

5 years ago, a fight with 2 drunken guys changed a lot of things concerning my musical life. Despite the fact I punched them hard, one of them hit my left wrist with a big knife, cuting nerves and veins. I lost sensitivity in a part of my hand and two fingers often do what they want, the wound having decided I was no more their master. Well, we could say I have two fingers left, but when…

Here we go!

This is a bit different - using a public forum community instead of my own domain for my Cigar Box Guitar Journey.  Cigar box Nation seems to be the place to be so why not use the resources here?

I am starting on my first Cigar Box Guitar.  I bought some boxes from the local cigar store (they have a pile in the corner - $1 each), a neck fro cbgitty.com, amp parts from Guitar Fuel on eBay, and I will make the rest.  The second one will be with my son for a home education…

Liftoff as of 6/23

I got myself a playable CBG as of the evening of the 23rd of June, 2013.  I've been so busy playing it and messing with it that I didn't get up to posting about it until now.

'T'ain't perfect, but I guess that's life.  It plays, and not too bad.  since these pics I drilled a couple 7/8 holes in the sound board and put psuedo-brass grommets in them.

I…

My first CBG

Well, on Monday (today's Wednesday) I went to Kansas City to a cigar store and picked up 8 cigar boxes for $24.00 plus tax. Three bucks apiece. Stopped by the hardwood lumber yard (Schutte) in KC and bought two poplar 1x2 and a red oak 2x2, all four feet long.  Laid 'em out in the shop to look at and make a decision.  Picked a couple boxes for my first two CBG's, measured the top thickness, and cut fretboards on the bandsaw.  Then came in and mortgaged the farm to CB Gitty.

The plan…

Coming Soon Online Store

There is a reason we have children. In today's world it is called technology.

I have been building CBGs about a year now and finally feel good enough about my builds to think of selling them. Also health problems make my going back to work after being on medical leave for six months questionable. Even if I can go back the medical restrictions may be such I may need transferring to a whole new job category and need to learn a new set of job skills. So, I need a "PLAN…

Christmas CBG Workshop with children

Hi there everyone.

Tomorrow is the big day of the Christmas Workshop with my guitar students. The traditional thing to do in Norway where I live is to make decorations of wood and felt, but we will make electric cigar box guitars, with single coil pick up and everything. The students are 11-15 years old and are quite excited. A friend of mine have pre-fabricated CBG-kits for us, so this will actually be a reasonably simple task. I will post some photos on my blog, and on this…

Nashville CBG builders and players ATTENTION

NASHVILLE builders and players ATTENTION!

We can all get together and join in as an association of Nashville area CBG. Artist to do charity work including building CBGs for worthy causes. We could put on concerts, donate time to teach the art to children and each other, do all kind of neat things. Heck we could even have regular meetings with tea and crumpets.

I have tried to look all of you up and send all of you a friend request. My motive was mainly selfish. I am a total…

This changes things

I listen to CBG on YouTube and CBN at work. It appears others Eaves Drop on my music. A co-worker comes into my office to "Chill" occassionally and he really likes the music. I like the old delta blues and just CBG blues in general. He likes the music where the notes are crisp and sharp.

I'd mentioned I had built two CBGs. He asked me one day if I build "those guitars". I replied "Yes".

He asked what did I get out of them. I said $75.00 unfretted and $100.00 fretted. Of course…

Cost of our HOBBY

Every day I check the mail box. Looking for one order from Gitty and one from a company in Thailand. The company inThailand sells really cheap capacitors, pots, boards, etc. However, it takes ten days or more to arrive. More usuallly. Gitty takes far less, it just seems like ten days since I am anxious. I am awaiting two sets of tuners. two sets of strings and twenty five grommits for strings.

Read an article today about tools needed to do a professional job of building CBGs. It was…

Insolitus Guitars: An Adventure in CBG creation and playing.

I am starting my own CBG company; Insolitus Guitars. I chose the name because cigar box guitars are unusual, uncommon and that is what I enjoy most. I love unusual things and music from these instruments is beautiful to me. Even on youtube from the least skilled player the music rings in my ears something sweet. I found out about cigar box guitars in college my sophomore year. I didn't have money for a guitar so I 'googled' DIY (Do It Yourself) guitars online and there they were. They were…
