I know quite a few people have made CBB's, and I want to make one for my best friend who's a bassist, does anyone have a source for a bass fretting scale?Continue

Sting Issues

Started this discussion. Last reply by Paul Craig on Sunday. 11 Replies

Alright, my first build is done, except for the high G string. It keeps breaking. I can't get past about a quarter step up from F before the horrendous "ping" of a broken string. I just got home from…Continue

Finally finished!!!

I finally got my first build complete, mostly. My high G string broke as I was tuning it up. As a guitarist, it's nothing new to have a string break every now and then, so I still make due for…Continue

"i think the neck is tilted in the other plane Taffy not front to back,  follow the string spacing down the neck.  totally not a criticism of the build. i dont think mine is exactly straight either..lol"

"Yep yep, already working on the sound holes, just gotta get over to my equipment to be able to cut them out since I finally have good templates. And as for the bridge, I fully intend to do an antler bridge on my next actual cigar box-bodied guitar.…"

Titch the Clown replied to Roland Wood's discussion Cigar Box Bass Fretting Scale?
"Ubass (ukulele bass) scale length is 50 cm or 20 inches but you need the big fat silicone strings.  Before he had the hofner McCartney played a regular guitar with piano strings on it 66cm or 26inches. Not many do that by choice these…"

Taffy Evans replied to Roland Wood's discussion Finally finished!!!
"It may sound better with a more solid bridge Roland, one with a larger footprint on the top, made of hardwood. Might be worth a try. That copper tube may be absorbing string energy instead of transmitting it to the top. Another observation is you…"

"Currently not all that great since I'm tuned an entire step down and having to use a capo to get to open G, but beyond that its great, and I'm very excited for the next one!"

Paul Craig replied to Roland Wood's discussion Sting Issues
"I prefer the 25" scale myself. Easier to bend strings on scales shorter than 25.5", but harmonics are better above 24.5". So the 25" scale is a good compromise. I always use a pitch pipe to tune unless I was tuning before a gig.…"

"Hey Ronald, I like it! How does it sound? That is the most important thing I think. You can always work out your "small" imperfections on the next one. Honestly I like it! Super happy you fretted it. :-) "

Kigar replied to Roland Wood's discussion Sting Issues
"There are a lot of ways to get gdg tuning but my favorite is the 345 strings. The strings are close to their "natural " tension when using a scale around 25"."
